Gulper Catfish Questions

I've read most all I can about my new Gulper Catfish. I have found little to no info, actually let me re-phrase that, I've found little bits of conflicting info; on whether or not these fish like or don't like current. I've read some ppl say these fish love the bubbles and swimming into the powerhead current. I've heard others say, Gulpers prefer slow moving water. And then I've read people put their powerhead on timers.

Frankly I don't know what to do. I have a low power, circulation head running now. My Gulper does seem to love it. But I'm not a fish so I really have no clue and am just speculating.

When we talk about 'flow' in a tank, it is always much less than in nature. This fish come from blackwater areas and as such there isn't massive amounts of flow in the natural habitat. I would therefore say creating masses of flow in a tank for this species isnt required.

Yea I understood that part, but they do seem to love bubbles and the filters flow. So I put this in it is the smallest of the circulation pumps from aqueon. I can try it without as well. I was just curious as to their behavior in aquariums with/without flow.

There is no fixed rule as far as how strong the water flow should be. There are many factors when we put our fishes in an enclosure. The deco, tank size, types of filtration etc.. will affect the water moment in the tank.

My advise is to observe the behavior of the fish. If they look relax, feed well and roam freely, then I think that is the right environment you have created for it.

Thanks, I'll post a video clip if I can tonight. The Gulper seems to really dig the flow and bubbles. Maybe more experienced eyes can says if hes digging the current or simply dealing with it.

Love these fish!, is your tank long rather than deep? In a long tank your gulper has more options to decide it's preferred distance from the powerhead, and you will be able to work out whether it is enjoying the extra flow created or not. Look forward to the vid!
