The weather is warming up here, and that means the fishing is back on for me.
I'll try to get some pics of my set up but here is what I am after this summer:

http://www.fishingmonthly.com.au/app/we ... 1210_1.jpg

Had to pinch a pic as works dvd drives are all disabled.
I am aiming to beat my Pb of 107cm (just a freckle over 42 inches for the non-metric).

I've been doing quite a bit of fishing in the Musconetcong River in NJ. There are a ton of trout, but they're not biting--it's been a hot, dry summer and they've kept to the bottom. I've caught a bunch of smallmouth bass (Micropterus dolomieu) there--need to take some pics tomorrow, if the weather is good. They put up a better fight than largemouth bass, IMO.

It's starting to cool down a little and I suspect the trout will begin hitting lures again in a month or so, if it keeps getting cool at night. BTW, my office is minutes away from the Hackettstown Hatchery. It's fun to walk along the holding ponds and see schools of brook trout going full speed for some dragonflies on the surface. Very powerful fish. Can't wait to hook one... or one of their salmonid cousins.

Apistomaster, if you've got any general tips for rainbows, brookies, and brown trout, I'd be glad to hear them. I'm going to be using a Pflueger President 5'6" graphite pole and lightweight spinning reel combo with 4lb. monofilament line. I've got some Joe's Flies trout fly lures that the smallmouth bass sure like to hit. Last time I went, I went three for three for turning casts into catches. The flies I have are in different colors, but pretty much look like this:

Got round to getting a rod in the water, and look what I caught! Not the best photos in the world, and the fish was a relative tiddler (18 lb 8 oz), but nice nonetheless.

Hello,

nice topic... I have plenty of picture to show you from my "swiss alpine rivers", basically with Salmo trutta fario aka "native european trout"... but unfortunately, every "vertical iPhone shot" picture I do have is too high or too wide for the forum...

as I'm at my job (ouuuuuuuuuuuuhhhhh [-( ), I'm not gonna take time to reduce these pictures now... but if interest, I'll take time tonight...

I'll be back...

Yeah. I have seen a few wels tackle records claimed on the news and i-net in the past years and they are all from the UK. Strange... but says something :)

Freshwater fishing is very popular in the UK, and wels are one of the biggest fish you can catch. They're good sport and fight hard. Lots of Brits go to Spain and catch the real big ones (>200 lb). You see these in the press a lot (a few of the live wels pics in the cat-elog are Spanish fish).

I think the British are the only people who would want to catch these big ugly things, though. All fishing in UK---excluding sea fish and trout---is catch and release. I think a lot of people from around the world find it hard to believe that you would want to catch an inedible fish for fun, and then just put it back.

are you kidding ?

in France, it's like a national sport to catch (and release) Silurus glanis @-)

you can find them in every big river, but especially in le Rhône... Around Lyon, you get some monsters very easily... just go googling with "gros silure record" as key word...

Why inedible? Pollution?

Yeah, people go anywhere. I saw Hungary has catch-a-wels resorts, Kazakhstan, and of course Russia. The biggest ones ever I think are from Volga, the 600 pounders, but have been badly overfished.

I managed to get some time off and go on a fishing trip in Lapland this summer. Great weather and lots of fish, but no photos unfortunately. However, being an aquarist I couldn't help myself and brought 20 of these guys with me home:

They're doing fine, though I doubt they'll spawn unless I can drastically lower temperature this winter.

Wrong choice of words. Not inedible, just not exactly the tastiest fish around.

In a bit, I'm off for a half-day of trout fishing in and around the pristine Rockaway and South Branch Raritan Rivers in Morris County, NJ. The NJDFW started their fall release on Oct 9. I believe they stocked the sections we're going to on the 11th. I'll bet there were a ton of anglers with their lines in the water right next to giant tube on the fish truck. The river should hopefully still have some catchable fish in it today : http://www.state.nj.us/dep/fgw/trtinfo_fall.htm

Brownies, brookies, and rainbows, oh my! :character-beavisbutthead:
