Planiloricaria cryptodon Breeding Info

Post by Fish.bob »

Hello
I'm new to Planetcatfish but have been breeding fish for many years.
Are there any breeding reports for Planiloricaria cryptodon? I've searched the internet and haven't found any details.
I have about 12 of these for more than a year and the largest are about 10" and very plump.
I Imported them as wild caught when they were about 4" size and they have grown quite well for me. Now I would like to try spawning them.
The largest ones are lighter colored with flat head/lip and are quite plump. The smaller ones are darker colored and have a slightly turned down nose/lip.
Any details would be appreciated.

I have some large adults 12-14" that I loaned to my buddy Rob, and he has had them spawn several times. He feeds them chopped mussels, in addition to everything you can think off....Large tank with fine sand and only tankmates are swordtails. Nothing special other than clean water, good diet, essentially no tankmates, peace and quiet, and time. Good luck!

Thanx Andrew for the info. Also great Pic's!
I suspect I have too many in one tank. There are 13 in a 24"X60" tank so each has an area they can call their own but still there are squabbles.
Do you know if Rob keeps them in pairs or in breeding groups?

They are kept in a group of 8. Five are larger, and 3 smaller (different ages). The tank is 7 feet x 2 feet, and yes, they definitely squabble.

Thank you.
I think I'll move 2 pair into a separate tank and see how they go.

Hi Characinkid,
Mine are kept at about 27 C (80.6 F), pH 6.5 , 120 ppm TDS. I'm still waiting for them to spawn so can't say yet this is good enough. I worry the temp is a bit high but can't do much about that. Rainy season will be starting soon so hopefully that'll help.
