A new species of Parotocinclus (Loricariidae)

Post by lfinley58 »

A new species of armored catfish Parotocinclus (Siluriformes: Loricariidae) from the rio Parnaíba basin, northeastern, Brazil by Telton P. A. Ramos, Sergio M. Q. Lima and Robson T. da Costa Ramos.
Neotropical Ichthyology, vol.15 no.2, 2017, Epub Apr 20, 2017. Open access, link below.
ABSTRACT:
Recent taxonomic studies indicated the presence of several undescribed species in the rio Parnaíba basin. Among those, a new species of Parotocinclus endemic of this drainage is herein described. It differs from most of its congeners, including the sympatric P. haroldoi and P. cearensis, by a vestigial or rudimentary adipose fin (vs. conspicuous adipose fin). This character is also present in P. bidentatus and P. muriaensis (both from the rio Paraíba do Sul basin, southeastern Brazil), P. spilurus (rio Jaguaribe basin, northeastern Brazil), P. seridoensis (rio Piranhas-Açu basin, northeastern Brazil), P. halbothi (rios Trombetas and Marowijne basins, northern Brazil and Suriname) and P. dani (from rio Tapajós in Mato Grosso State, Brazil). The new species differs from these latter species mainly by the abdomen extensively covered by broad dermal plates. It also differs from P. haroldoi and P. cearensis by light bands between the snout tip and the nostrils.

The new species is named Parotocinclus cabessadecuia.

Nice, thanks Lee. The paper was accepted by the journal on my birthday and published on Clare's. :-)

It is now, because I added it. But prior to adding I opened the genus page and it was not listed. Did I miss it?

Cheers, Eric

For some reason, Lee's link is not working. This link works for me:

This link ought to work, but it's not working for me either. Maybe too new? http://dx.doi.org/10.1590/1982-0224-20160153

Hi Jools and Bekateen,

First - Happy Birthday Jools and equally great wishes to Clare.

I just popped in and saw the activity (I have not been receiving post notifications - or am receiving them very late - but that is for another place and time).

I just tried all three links in this thread to the paper (my original and the two provided by Bekateen) and all go to the paper for me. These things always befuddle me (I think as Jools knows). Are they all working now for you two?

Yes, now they are all working for me too... But they didn't work for me earlier today though. Glad it's resolved.

Cheers, Eric
