Saved this one from the sewer, my guess an LDA 67

Post by saki »

Saved this beauty from the sewer today. My thoughts are that it's an LDA 67 maybe L488?. She (He?) is about 8.5cm long and has a rather thick body. Her belly is also in tiger pattern. Any thoughts?

thnx a lot!

It's a beauty. 12cm? (I assume you mean TL, not SL) Either way, that's huge! :-)

You say you found it in the sewer? What do you mean? The pipes underground for rainwater runoff?

Cheers, Eric

My parents in law own a pet store. A costumer brought some goldfish along with this one. asking them to take them of his hands otherwise he would throw them in a local river (heavily poluted). Parents in law knew I'm into cats and immediately send me a picture. I went there to pick 'her' up after work. Not sure what u mean with Tl and Sl?

EDIT i've held her on my hand before putting it in the tank now measured my hand (palm) and it's about 8.5 cm sorry for the inconvenience

Okay, thanks for explaining what you meant about sewer... I was imagining that it was in the sewer and you fished it out. =)). But wow you got a neat fish!

TL and SL mean total length (includes length of tail) and standard length (measured from tip of nose to caudal peduncle/base of tail). Scientists usually don't include tail length in fish measurements because tail length can vary with health or fish and if other fish are biting tail tips.

The maximum sizes listed on this website are all SL, not TL.

Even at 85mm, that's a big fish! :-)

By the way, your fish appears to have odontodes on its caudal peduncle. Give that, and given its large size but it's not wide-bodied, I think your fish is male, not female.

For anybody that struggles to see the image at imgur.com, here are the actual pics (I just added ".jpg" onto the original URL of each and nested them in the [ img ] tags). It's a really nice fish!

You're welcome. :-)

I'm still pondering its ID, and I don't have a good answer. When I first looked, I was going to say or (as you propose, same as LDA067). But for all of the maccus I've seen, and in the photos of L448, when they get that big, their stripe pattern really breaks down on the face, losing definition; the face gets little broken squiggles instead of thicker distinct straight lines like your fish has (when babies, maccus has straight facial lines, but not as adults).

If this is either maccus or L448, it's not like any I've seen. But at the same time, I don't have a better match. It's a shame you can't get more.

Cheers,
Eric

it sure is a wood eater, when the aquarium light is on he hurry's to his favorite cave. But when it goes out I find him on the driftwood in my tank. The algae waffers with spirulina wich my Ancistrus sp4 really love remain untouched. The same goes for the waffers with waterflea i feed to my cory's (hastatus). Gonna try a piece of cucumber next.
Really want to make the rest of his life pleasant for him cause I believe he suffered enough, at the moment he seems quite happy.

In addition to wood (their main diet), all of my Panaqolus enjoy sweet potato twice per week and weekly feedings with boiled clam or shrimp. This is true for my adults and my fry. I've never seen any dietary problems for them. The protein will help them grow and condition.
