I had a few starting around 7 cm (3 inches, almost), but perhaps others managed with smaller fish

I've had two different colonies start at 5-6cm TL. The first time I was sure it was just an over achieving male, but I think it has to do with the frequent large volume water changes I try to do whenever I'm raising them out. I want optimal growth in minimal time and evidently they take that sort of thing rather seriously ;).

How well are the male's bristles developed at this point. I have a female that is definitely carrying eggs and I was wondering if my male (who is just starting to get some of his bristles) would do the job

I have had normal colored Ancistrus sp 3 breed at 6 cm and less than 12 months old.

Has he moved into a cave and protects it, if he has than I would think it is just a matter of whether or not the female would want to approach him and most likely would.
