Does the name mean they came in from Paraguay, or does it mean someone opened up a book to ID some fish, and the closest looking fish in their eyes was something called Hypostomus sp. "Paraguay" ???

If we assume it's from Rio Paraguay, it's possibly:

L266 is another possible candidate, but it looks higher backed than your fish.

There are another 6 species in the Cat-eLog from that river, but they are different enough to not be likely candidates.

Not sure why the Cat-eLog has as from Paraguay. L266 comes out of the Ucayali system in Peru (and hence why it is sometimes seen in the trade).

This is documented in DATZ, Aqualog and Wels Atlas II.

So that seems to be a mistake. I'm putting a post in the bugs section to remind myself. I also checked L231, and it is also NOT from Rio Paraguay.

This little one was found in a batch of wildcaught Ancistrus from Paraguay.

He looks a lot like the other one's in this thread but I think he's not the same. What do you think?

Well, for what it's worth the patterning on the fins is different.

Patterns on the unpaired fins are different, but I am betting it is just the color/pattern differences between juvenile and subadult.

These Hypostomus are very hard to ID. This one is from Colombia and was spotted in Pier Aquatics, Wigan (I'm told it has an L Number but haven't found it yet):
