Very happy to report that my little guy is getting bigger! Fat and happy too!

Take a look ... yes, def. Tanganyikan, looking like a Multi to me, but I still don't know how! He's just shy of about an inch ...

not a multi!

probably a petricola/lucipinnis; the lead dorsal spine has a white tip and it's too elongated for a multi already; baby multi's tend to be highbuilt with a triangular dorsal.

Totally agree

It definately has Luci/petriola heritage - did any cichlids move from tank to tank - if so did they have fry? An egg could have been transferred on a rock/ with water etc? How many Petricola & lucipinnis did you have in the other tank?

I'm going to go so far as to say it's probably S. lucipinnis as they are much more common than S. petricola--at least they are in all of the LFS's I have seen in NJ. And, when I do see S. lucipinnis in the LFS's, they are usually mislabeled as S. petricola... even in such nice shops as Absolutely Fish in Clifton and Tropiquarium (my favorite) in Ocean.

Must be a Petricola, never had a Lucipinnis! And yes, a few Cichlids were in that tank as I consolidated, but geez NO Petricolas. Anything could happen I guess ... hey, as long as this guy is happy and healthy, I'm all smiles! SO great that I have at least one (because my husband "made me" give away everyone else!). Thanks for all the comments! More pix next month ... :)

BTW. I'm a big fan of Absolutely Fish, as a matter of fact - I gave them my Decorus and a few others, a dozen or so Cichlids too.

I can't see too clearly but the fish bottom right corner (on the right of the Petricola) looks like Lucipinnis.

99 times a Petricola is sold it is actually Lucipinnis

That's very generous of you. I must admit I'm not a fan of them at all and I would never give them any fish without getting something in return. While I stop in a couple times a year or so for ideas, I haven't bought anything from them since they were known as Aquatropics. It's a very clean shop and they have quite an extensive collection of fresh and salt water fish, but I'm put off by the arrogant attitudes I usually encounter there as well as the rip-off prices.

For instance, I have pointed out to them the S. lucipinnis they are selling as S. petricola. I even took the time to show them how to differentiate the two species. I was then given a lot of attitude and they never did make the correction. They are one of the few shops around that does get true S. petricola in. However, not all synos they are selling as S. petricola are truly S. petricola.

Anyway, good luck with the little Tanganyikan syno!

... I always get something, a credit or whatever. I brought in a beautiful show Tang the other day ... that's kept me in frozen krill for 3 months! ;)

They're good guys, once you get to know them. Have you been there lately? A guy fondly ref. to as "Little Patrick" is my favorite. Nice guy, honest, if he doesn't know - he'll find out. Let me know if you're in the area, would love for you to stop by to see my baby Syno! I'm in Denville.

:)

looks like a regular baby lucipinnis to me

the pattern is odd, but both petricola and lucipinnis come in large-spot and small-spot varieties and these are mixed within the populations

I've seen shipments coming in from Zambia (everything mixed) and burundi (true petricola) and they have a wide variety within the species.

Very sad. The little one died. :(

Fine this whole time ... found him sorta lodged in the heater.

Too bad. Sorry to hear about that. Judging by the pics, it sure looks like S. lucipinnis--although, hard to verify because the anal fin is obscured.
