Etymology The name Pangasius comes from a local (Bengali) name of the fish (pungas).

Size 3000mm or 118.1" SL. Find near, nearer or same sized spp.
Identification Palatal teeth in two crescentic bands, 23-28 gill rakers, swimbladder with two chambers, posterior chamber reaching to above anal-fin base.
Sexing Females are fuller-bodied.

Distribution Asia: large rivers of Indian subcontinent and Myanmar (Ganges, Krishna?, Godavari, Irrawaddy). Widely introduced in its geographical range for aquaculture. Reports from Thailand, Malaysia and Indonesia are based on misidentifications.

Down Husbandry Information
Feeding A benthic carnivore, so best fed with meaty foods such as catfish tablets and shrimp. User data.
Furniture Needs large amount of open space for swimming room and some plants to help reduce the nervous nature of the fish.
Compatibility Will eat smaller fishes, but peaceful with fishes of its own size or larger. An extremely nervous fish that is best kept alone, though.
Breeding Not reported, although it is widely bred in ponds for food. In the wild, it spawns in estuaries.
