Down Breeding
Behaviour My efforts to spawn these fish are described here: https://www.planetcatfish.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=49481 and specifically here: https://www.planetcatfish.com/forum/viewtopic.php?p=338853#p338853. Original mating not observed. Eggs found under false floor in the morning after spawn.
Eggs There were 50 amber eggs laid which were 1.5mm in diameter.
Time to hatch 1 days
Number: 75
Free swimming: 3 days
Segregation When I found the first eggs, I moved them to a German breeder ring (GBR). All the eggs died within an hour, I suspect because they were too young and fragile for the move. I knew there were more eggs in the tank, but I couldn't get them on that first morning. The next morning, in the tank below the false floor I saw some bad eggs from the day before and some good eggs too. I didn't know if the good eggs were new or leftover from the day before. This time, instead of collecting the eggs, I left them under the false floor in the adult tank and I waited for the eggs to hatch. Most had hatched within 24 hours. 36 hours after I found the eggs, all the good eggs were done hatching, so I removed the parents and false floor from the tank and carefully siphoned the wigglers with a turkey baster and put the wigglers in a GBR. Before their yolk was used up, I moved the babies to a small (1) gallon tank, no filtration but with heater and airstone, to raise them as I do with hatchling Amblydoras nauticus (https://www.planetcatfish.com/forum/viewtopic.php?p=338616#p338616). For the next and for future spawns, I will move babies straight to the tank from the parent tank... no GBR. The GBR is not necessary because the eggs are already hatched before I collect them.
