Scientific NameCorydoras schultzei  Holly, 1940
Common NamesPeru Gold Stripe Cory
Black Cory, Gold Flash Cory
Type LocalityAquarium specimen (said to be from very small water-courses of the Amazon).
PronunciationKory DOOR ass - sch ult zee eye
EtymologyCory = helmet, doras = skin. In this case it was incorrectly used to mean armour (cuirasse) instead of skin in allusion to the dual rows of plates that run along the flanks of this genus. Specifically named for Otto Schultz.

IdentificationCorydoras are identified by their twin rows of armour plates along the flanks and by having fewer than 10 dorsal fin rays. They are most commonly confused with the other genera in the sub-family, namely Brochis, Scleromystax and Aspidoras.

This species is usually considered a synonym of Corydoras aeneus. However, there is a school of thought that holds the opinion that Corydoras aeneus should be restricted to the holotype form which is from the island of Trinidad and specifically is not as elongate as C. schultzi. Somewhere across the huge geographic range of "continental" Corydoras aeneus and amongst its several geographic variations, which are really quite different shapes and sizes, sees the species featured here. If for no other reason than to prevent captive hybridisation and indeed to help separate the other forms, the junior synonym is used here as a species in its own right.

The black colour form was produced by German aquarists in the 90's and is, confusingly, sold as Corydoras venezuelanus or Corydoras sp. VENEZUELA BLACK. This black strain has nothing to do with the country of Venezuela or the separate species, Corydoras venezuelanus.
SexingFemales grow larger and are more full-bodied, this is best observed from above the fish. Males will typically have more pointed as opposed to more rounded fin tips as they mature.
General RemarksThe all black strain (actually the fins are typically brown) is a line bred fish produced in Germany in the mid 1990's from C. schultzi. Some of these fish were sold to breeders in the Czech Republic, where they have been mass produced and subsequently have spread all over the world. .

DistributionImported from Peru.

FeedingWill accept a wide range of commercial foods including tablets, granules and flakes. Live (or frozen) foods such as bloodworm, white worm, grindal worm, Daphnia and tubifex are readily accepted.
FurnitureShade provided by overhanging rock work, arching bogwood, tall or floating plants are all that is required. Ideally substrate should be sand, but rounded gravel is an imperfect alternative. Avoid keeping over rough edged (chipped) gravel, this will increase this risk of damage the fishes barbels when it tries to dig.
CompatibilityA peaceful, shoaling, community fish.
Suggested TankmatesKeep in a shoal of at least 6 individuals - a good first catfish for a beginner's community aquarium - especially the black form which is captive raised.
BreedingHas been bred in the aquarium.
