Re: Walstad Type tank

A general rule I have picked up in over 30 years of fishkeeping... The minute any author or product claims "no more water changes" drop the article or product in the nearest trash bin. Better yet, return the item and buy some extra buckets and water conditioner.

Re: Imported as Ancistrus bodenhameri from Petra Aqua. Now spawned!

Just out of curiosity, what are the water parameters? The area around Cucuta is cold by South American standards. People from that area are called "gochos" (swine) because they are generally light skinned and the cold weather gives them ruddy cheeks (thus pink like a pig's skin). Keep in m...

Re: Imported as Ancistrus bodenhameri from Petra Aqua. Now spawned!

First of all congrats! Without provenience, however, I would be shy about linking them to a known sp. Petra Aqua could have a good reason for identifying these as bodenhameri. Then again the id could be based on nothing more than the first brown Ancistrus they found alphabetically in an aquarium boo...

Re: Starting a fishroom

The biggest issue with the snails (any snail sp really) is that they can quickly become the main biomass in an aquarium if left to reproduce uncontrollably. The best long term solution I have found is to use snail traps to keep the population as low as possible. Don't go the Assassin snail direction...

Re: Synodontis Njassae

At the genetic level we know several Syno spp. can be hybridized under lab conditions. There are at least nine hybrids that show up in the hobby and that number will likely only increase as unscrupulous breeders seek to "invent" new inventory. However, genetically possible under lab condit...

Re: Pseudopimelodus sp. schultzi?!?

Agree a side view would help. The issue with "bufonius" is that it is unlikely we even have pics of that sp. It has just become a catch all designation for what are likely several spp from different drainages.

Re: Pleco size

Oddly... Jools and I were just talking about this on the phone. Feed vegetables everyday and tablets or other protein based foods 1-2 times per week. For many loricariids, to get good growth, you want to keep their gut stuffed. It is a situation where the quantity of foods constantly available leads...

Re: Stuby's fish room build

Chuck,
Just out of curiosity, what does the water bill look like? Off the top of my head I am calculating just under 4,000 gallons a month for water changes.

Quandale, I am going to answer here as you have asked similar questions in three threads. Start with the Reproduction articles in Shane's World. There are 100s of articles covering various catfish spawnings. Second, for each entry in the Cat-eLog there is a breeding section with links to breeding re...

Re: 20g and 20g just corys tank: advice on stocking density

What is your water change regime? This is really the single biggest factor. If you are doing 50-60% weekly I would go with the old rule of 1" of fish per gallon.

Lee Finley sending me the David Sands book. 1994?

Lee's trip to Brazil would be the first collection and breeding of a blind cave Ancistrus.

Erica is suggesting we all do a history of the catfish hobby for the next CatCon.

Plecos: The article that started it all.

In January 1994 AFM ran Ginny's seminal article on spawning an Ancistrus species from the Rio Negro. There may have been earlier articles in UK or German club magazines, but this was the first glossy major magazine article on spawning and rearing pleco fry that most of us in the U.S. had ever seen. ...
