Re: What's your New Years Fish Plans?

I'm thinking of building a true river tank and get some more Chaetostoma spp. It'll probably never happen though as a) the LFS's here never bring them in, and b) I wouldn't know where to put it. :D Perhaps when I retire..... Looking for some new interesting plecos for my 110 gal loach tank, perhaps ...

Re: plecos don't come off glass??

Rubbernoses like hard surfaces, either rocks or glass. Mine are mostly on the glass, often on the rocks, and sometimes on the wood. The BN behaviour is a bit unusual I guess.

The case of the vanishing and re-appearing Oto

I haven't been on the forum for about 6 months. Glad to see that it's still thriving! I have been watching my 110 gal catfish/loach community tank as usual all that time. About five months ago I started losing a few fish, probably because I didn't have time to care for it as I should have, or perhap...

Re: Sterbai

Mine seemed to do just fine when the temperature spiked at 30C ((86 F), but that was for a a few days only (I lost a Botia kubotai ). I kept them at 82 F for quite some time before moving them to the tank I have now, which sits at 78F most of the time. You may want to make sure you have extra aerati...

Congratulations. Exciting news, and not at all 'nothing new'!! I've never had corys breed - you should be proud!

Re: What is your favorite pl*co?

I have nothing spectacular like that, but in terms of entertainment value, utility as algae eaters, and visibility, I have come to really like my rubbernose plecos. Like the BNs they generally remain fairly small so they can fit into relatively small tanks. They do like the water a bit cooler, but m...

Corydoras aeneus, or....

I have these Cory's that were bought as Corydoras aeneus . I just got some pictures of them the other day, and the larger one (bought from a proper LFS) and the smaller ones do differ a bit. I know there's quite a bit of variation in that species depending on origin, but I thought I would request co...

Re: Newbie advice

I would start by looking at the tank you have or intend to get. The size will determine what you can have. Many plecos get quite large, e.g., the "common" pleco that is often sold cheaply at sizes ranging from 1-4 inches. Then you might consider what species are available to you. If you ar...

Re: gravel, sand or rounded pebbles?

I'd increase the numbers per species of what you have first, although mixed species schools are apparently fairly common in the wild. Check the Cat-eLog to make sure you get species with similar requirements if you add. I have lost a number of them by ignorance about their temperature requirements, ...

Five angels and a pleco in a 14 gallon tank is just asking for trouble anyway. Do a thorough cleaning, re-cycle the tank, and add guppy or something.

What else do you have in the tank and what consitions? Check them out in the Cat-eLog to see what the requirements are. I expect that one or more species have been covered in the CotM as well. I love the ones I have. I have a planted tank ( Cryptocoryne spp.), and they are busy feeding on algae on t...

Re: gravel, sand or rounded pebbles?

I gravel vac regularly in my tanks and heard that sand can't be vac'd like that, or it will suck right out of the tank with the water. Is this true? How do you clean it well? You CAN gravel vac sand as long as it is not too fine, and if it is you probably don't want it in the tank. I use pool filte...

Re: Reasonable Candidate, Chaetostoma sp. (1) ?

I have to say it's good to see alot of interest in chaetostoma species lately as they are a fish deffinately worth setting tanks up just for themselves. They, unlike most, loricarids, come out during the day and have fab personalies and are fasionably eco friendly, they don't require heaters in the...

Get some loaches, and you'll have even more fun. They were put on this earth to worry their owners, I think! I have a few Otos and they seem to be pretty sturdy fish once they are acclimatized to a tank.

A belated welcome to Planet catfish. We've had a cold spell here for the past week and a half, but only down to -34C or so at night. Now it's nice and sunny and -10C. This reminds me of growing up in Pitea, sweden. I had a 250 l tank. One Christmas we went away, and the furnace failed during a -25C ...

Re: River sand - cories don't seem to like sand?

That looks like volcanic material, which would be very sharp. I use pool filter sand, which is recommended for loaches, and they often feed in a similar manner to cories. My cories ( and ) sure seem to like it. They poke around like little piggies in the sand! :D

The two Synodontis euptera I used to have are now around 6 inches each, and they have become incredibly bold, in spite of being in a 120 gal 6 foot tank in an area with relatively little (human) traffic. If you stand in front of the tank, they will position themselves at the front staring back at yo...
