Re: Fitting a prefilter onto a Penguin 350

Thanks, Larry. Filling a media bag with Ehfifix and using that as a prefilter is an interesting idea. I'll give it a try. But this would seem to work regardless of whether the intake tube is round or rectangular, so I'm not sure I understand the logic of the first part of your recommendation about r...

Re: Tips and Tricks

I attach a Lee's cone worm feeder to the gravel tube of my Python siphon when I'm draining water out of my tanks. Fits well and keeps even the smallest fish out.

I rarely stir up my substrate with the gravel tube. If I really need to do that, then I do it without the feeding cone.

Fitting a prefilter onto a Penguin 350

For many years I've used Penguin 300/330 power filters fitted with Hydro-Sponge prefilters, and this has worked very well for me. I just bought a new Penguin 350, and find that the intake is now rectangular instead of round, which means I can no longer easily attach a prefilter to it. Can anyone sug...

Re: Pterocryptis Sp Feeding

Slightly off-topic, but I have two Silurichthys phaiosoma in a 29 gal tank with Trigonostigma heteromorpha and hengeli, Hyalobagrus flavus and Betta coccina. I'd hoped that they would be "a peaceful, schooling species that is compatible with most fish," as the Catelog describes Silurichthy...

Same fish as this . Whether it's really Synodontis frontosa I don't know, but I've kept this fish for more than 10 years, and I'm quite sure it's the same fish.

Morphologically, the fish in the two photos certainly look very similar, but I always thought of S haugi as a grayish-black fish.

Re: syno tanganicae

Toby, photos that I've seen of S. tanganicae do not look like the fish photos in this thread. There are some black and white photos in a Poll book (will have to dig around for the reference) of freshly caught S. tanganicae sitting on the deck of a boat. I also recall a photo by Erwin Schraml of the ...

Re: Syno Dhonti

Boulenger described dhonti. Matthes came along some five decades later and described irsacae. This was thrown into synonymy with dhonti -- don't remember by who -- when it was claimed that Mathhes' "irsacae" was just the juvenile form of dhonti. Then Wright & Page came along another fi...

I am very interested as well to see your synos Dinyar. Richard, here is photo of one of my pollis that I got from Atlantis about 8 months ago, I think they are text book polli, I have 5 total all ranging from 5.5" to ~7". The other smaller gold polli (1 of 4) that I posted earlier came fr...

Re: syno tanganicae

So have you an opinion on the fish pictured? Your experiences would be appreciated as always My opinion is that Tanganyika Synodontis are a taxonomic mess, with many transitional forms between the defined and to be defined species. Wright & Page took a step forward, but there's still a long way...

Re: syno tanganicae

Atlantis only got this one dhonti, although they ordered a lot more. They said on the next shipment they will hopefully have more. They are a very reputable business and don't mess around with lies. First, it is extremely unlikely that S. dhonti has ever entered the hobby. Wright and Page borrowed ...

Given you guys are familiar with it, is the "giant petricola" (e.g. fish#1 in this thread) already in the catelog? Is it Synodontis sp(5) ? Jools I'm pretty sure fish 1 is NOT the same species as Synodontis sp(5) . Can't comment on ilebrevis. S. cf. petricola would be my best guess for bo...

Re: Irsacae or dhonti

My impression from Wright and Page and other discussions is that S dhonti is a large brown fish known only from the holotype, and all museum specimens and fish in the aquarium trade that were called "dhonti" are in fact "irsacae". The images in question were contributed by Gregg ...

DIY replacement for Eheim Classic white filter pads?

I've run a number of Eheim Classic canister filters for years, and have always used Eheim-branded replacement white filter pads. I would now like to find a cheaper DIY alternative, and was thinking of simply cutting regular filter floss to the required shape. I would be interested to learn about oth...

Many of the responses above have offered technological fixes, and these may be helpful. There is probably also a role for behavioral solutions, i.e., making the fish room a comfortable place to hang out so that you can watch water levels rise and fall without getting bored. For some people, the down...

Re: Synodontis ornatipinnis or hybrid?

Is sidguppy real or a hybrid? Marc seems like a standup guy, but I haven't met him either, so for now, his sighting of the guppy remains to be attested.

I think a good head shot with dentition would help us decide this once and for all. Also, don't forget the humorous process!
