Re: L244 Sexing: Now with a spawn and fry

Many thanks Eric and Flatfish!
So far, the most I have seen at one time is 4 fry, there may be a few more.

Re: L244 Sexing: Now with a spawn and fry

It's been an age since I've been on - sorry! Lots of other pressures in life and I've been trying to gradually reduce the numbers of fish and tanks. Needless to say the fish have other ideas, despite me not actually trying to breed anything! In one of my tanks I have finally found the absolute favou...

Re: L244 Sexing: Now with a spawn and fry

Thanks Eric. I haven’t searched the tank - it’s a bit of a labyrinth and I’m not sure if tearing it all apart is the best thing to do at this stage.

Re: L244 Sexing: Now with a spawn and fry

I just did my regular weekly water change and substrate siphon on the L244 tank, and found these in a bucket of waste water. I’m not sure whether to be happy or annoyed with myself!
I have set up a nursery, at least 3 are still wriggling and 3 have not yet hatched.

Re: Farlowella diet question

Looking good :-)

When she’s a bit older, they will usually prefer a spawning site on the glass where there is the best water flow (such as opposite a filter or powerhead outlet). If you want this to be at the front, make sure that’s where the best flow is.

Re: Farlowella diet question

I’m pretty sure the new one is a female, so you now have a pair :-) She’s still quite small so make sure she has plenty to graze on. I’ve found my twigs to be pretty robust in response to short-term stress, I once had a big tank disaster when it over-filled to the cover glass and lost all oxygenatio...

Re: Black worms

I’m sorry, work has become incredibly busy and I am having to spend a lot of time away from home. I don’t know when I’ll get a chance to pack and send anything to you. It might be best to leave it until after the Christmas rush anyway.

Re: Black worms

Thanks. I'm happy to send some on that basis. My remaining doubt concerns the ambient temperatures which are currently below freezing here. A simple cost-effectively packed jiffy bag might not keep them alive in the cold. But a proper insulated box with heat packs will cost a lot more to send. Any t...

Re: Black worms

I’ve got two tanks with healthy populations of them in the substrate. I’m not sure if it’s permitted to post them from the UK to the Netherlands? I have sent some within the UK which arrived successfully.

Re: Feeding Repashy

I make my repashy in empty blister trays from frozen foods, which are about 1cm cubes. For adult plecs (about 5" long) I generally reckon an average of half a cube per day. Smaller fish (juveniles and otos) often prefer to eat off the surface of twigs and branches. Sometimes I dip twigs in the ...

Re: L244 Sexing: Now with a spawn and fry

I see my two juvenile L244s quite often as a rapidly disappearing yellow flash. This evening I finally managed to creep up on one with the camera and get a few shots before it scarpered into a crevice. So I thought I'd post the pics here as an update to the story. They're growing rather slowly but l...

Hi, sorry for the delay in responding, life is busy! There are a couple of threads here about my Farlowellas, the first one was about ID and the second one about breeding and raising the younsgters. Re: Farlowella diet question

Thanks for the extra pics, I think he is a male Farlowella vittata. He looks healthy and I think you're doing the right thing with the tank decor and feeding. The males have a slightly shorter rostrum (nose) covered in odontodes (they look a bit like stubbly hairs) whereas the females have a longer ...

It’s a bit hard to tell from that angle, but I think it looks a lot like my male Farlowella vittata.
If you can get a photo of his underside when suckered to the glass we may be able to identify species and sex.

Re: Farlowella diet question

Mine certainly spend a lot of time suckered to branches and twigs. I’d say they need wood, not to eat but to rest on: ideally thinner branches criss-crossing the tank.

Re: Farlowella diet question

They eat algae and the microscopic creatures in it (‘aufwuchs’). The staple diet of my adults is repashy gel, I use a mixture of soilent green, morning wood and bottom scratcher. They also eat courgette and red peppers. I feed the fry on chlorella and spirulina powder, with an occasional treat of mi...

Re: Do Loricariidae feed off parents?

Thanks - some interesting insights and experiences!
I’ve caught the little one and put it back in the nursery, so hopefully will avoid any problems with the adults. I can provide higher food density in the nursery and they grow pretty well in there.

Do Loricariidae feed off parents?

My twig cats Farlowella vittata have been breeding again recently, and I decided to save some of the youngsters in a nursery. Two batches of them are growing well. I just noticed one of the smaller twiglets has escaped back into the main tank (or perhaps missed getting collected up in the first plac...

Re: Tank dimensions - small height

I have a custom size tank 60x60x30cm(high) which I use as a pleco breeder. I had it made that size to fit an awkward space under the stairs. So far I have successfully bred 3 species in it (at different times), including Ancistrus, Panaqolus and Pseudolithoxus. I think 25cm depth would also be fine....

Re: Feeding herbivores and carnivores in the same tank

I’ve had problems in one of my large tanks with a mix of plecs and other fish - the Panaqolus (captive bred by me) seem to get very bloated as they have acquired a taste for richer foods. I have not had similar problems with wild-caught fish (e.g Pseudolithoxus) which seem to stick closer to their n...

Congratulations, Eric! I’ll be following developments with interest - I’ve never kept woodcats but always been rather tempted by them.

My fish seem to be celebrating Easter with eggs as well - I had spawns from Corydoras oiapoquensis, Farlowella vittata and Biotodoma cupido all on Thursday.

Re: Too much brain time committed to understanding cory mimicry

Hi Eric, Not my specialist subject, but I am interested in the Cory species in different lineages that have similar colour patterns. Where these live together in the wild, is there evidence that one evolved to mimic the other, or simply that both species evolved to be well camouflaged in the local e...

Re: L244 Sexing: Now with a spawn and fry

[I'm not sure of the relevance of the previous post on this thread>?] Yesterday I made the decision to give the L244 tank a good clean and move the babies into a fry box so I could target-feed them better, as they seemed thin and slow-growing. I had previously seen a maximum of 2 fry, and I only fou...
