Trichomycterus largoperculatus, sp. nov. from the Rio Paraíba do Sul, southeastern Brazil

Trichomycterus largoperculatus Costa, W. J., & Katz, A. M. (2022). A new catfish of the genus Trichomycterus from the Rio Paraíba do Sul Basin, south-eastern Brazil, a supposedly migrating species (Siluriformes, Trichomycteridae). Zoosystematics and Evolution, 98, 13. A new species of the catfi...

Re: New group of 6 Microglanis iheringi... or are they?

Not to push overdoing it, but an inspection today of a nearby wholesaler found more of the odd Colombian/Venezuelan Microglanis (still being sold as poecilus) with the pale holes in the subdorsal saddle. 11 in all. They're covered in ich, but I've had good luck treating past Microglanis with NoxIch,...

Re: Peckoltia or not?

I'm told that at least some pleco experts consider L205 to be brevis, but still would be from a different location. I went with brevis as an ID because the head spots don't extend back far on the body. But as Jools noted, the fish is faded, so maybe more spots will become visible later. Cheers, Eric...

Is it just me? The fish in the photos seem too far away for me to sex them. Can you get closer photos?

Re: Thought was p. Gibbiceps, second thoughts

My understanding is that except for girth in gravid females, the reliable way to sex is comparing genital papillae. Sexing is good to know for curiosity sake and naming (if you name your fish), but of course, these big fish haven't been spawned in aquaria, presumably because of their habit of burrow...

In this screen capture, you can see the male really twisting his anal fin while trying to inseminate the female:

Re: Auchenipterichthys coracoideus (zamora woodcat) spawned

Hi All, It's been a while since I saw these Auchenipterichthys coracoideus do anything interesting, but tonight I observed two adults (I estimate 8-10cm SL each) get into a clasped spiral and swim to the water surface before breaking off. Sadly, I found no eggs tonight. But I'll check again tomorrow...

Re: Genders of these L 204, 260

Thank you Eric. I suspected the same with the 204, now if I could just get them to "like" each other! The males' caudal peduncle odontodes are very obvious, so sexing them is easy. The large size of the third fish, without obvious odontodes, really says it's female. And as far as liking e...

Re: Genders of these L 204, 260

L204 - 2 males and one female. L260 - maybe 2 males (sides) and one female (middle). But I can't see the pectoral spines clearly to see if the males are showing odontode development. So I'm not certain in the L260s. Your images are not loading. @fishguy 1978, they are loading for me. Can you still n...
