Re: Panaqolus claustellifer (L306) spawn after long break

Belated update: Weekend before last I had to move these two groups. The tank of the group that hadn't spawned I could move (with my son's help) having drained it of all but a few centimetres of water and leaving decor, caves and fish in place. Once in its new position, I refilled it with HMA-filtere...

Re: Panaqolus claustellifer (L306) spawn after long break

Are L-306 more rare than l-397? They're certainly harder to find in the UK Well, the storm came and went and left us with power cuts and fallen trees but no further spawns. Today I pulled the fry from the males cave as they looked like they were about ready to 'fledge' and I need to move their tank...

Panaqolus claustellifer (L306) spawn after long break

Last week I found one of my male Panaqolus claustellifer with wrigglers in his cave, for the first time in about 3 years. They used to spawn regularly between May and November each year, but then totally switched off. A year ago or so I decided to split the group of 4 males and 2 females over two ta...

Re: What sex are my L397

1 is clearly male, judging by hairy rear part of the body 2 looks like female to me, going by body shape (wider than widest part of the head) 3 and 4 look to be male from shape but appear to lack the odontes on the body, so not sure about these, but I think most likely male Given that 2 and 3 appear...

Re: Silutichthys sp. & Unidentified Orange-ish Rheophilic (?) Catfish ID?

The first one certainly looks a lot like the Silurichthys phaiosoma I used to catch in black water tributaries in the Rungan/Kahayan drainage in southern Borneo. You may need to do anal fin ray count and compare shape of the caudal fin to make sure, if I remember correctly. Do you know where it was ...

Re: L306 or L169?

These both look good for L306 to me. L169 tends to have a more stripy face as the vertical dark bands split horizontally (have a look at images on L169 page to see what I mean), something I have never seen on L306, which I have kept and bred for a number of years, so I have seen many. The facial pat...

Juvenile Waligonia leerii? Erm, no…

I caught this in a peat swamp in Central Kalimantan in Borneo. Wondering whether it might be . There were lots of them and would be interesting to identify this as nursery area for this important local food fish.

Re: L226? Identification & Sexing

Next question: How easy or difficult are they to breed? Assuming I found a female, what could they compare to? I've bred BN's and L136 for a reference. I've not kept these so can't say for certain but I would imagine similar to other species of Panaqolus, which means generally not quite as easy as ...

Re: ID these baby plecos

I have seen and pictured many L306 youngsters and none have ever had a 'split' or pale line in the band on the face like the one in this picture, even though there can be quite a bit of variation in pattern. That, and the lack of red colouration, makes me think it is unlikely to be that species.

Re: UK Breeders

Facebook has banned the advertising of livestock and I think most people selling plecos in the UK now use the Band app - search for the UK Plecos group. I've got Panaqolus claustellifer (aka L306) and Panaqolus sp(l448) available if you're interested. I'm based in Cornwall but do occasionally travel...

Re: L226 Vs L204 eating question

Although I have not kept these two species, from my experience with several other Panaqolus I think it’s safe to say they’re all messy. I consider a prefilter over the inlet of external filters a must with them.

Re: 10cm Pleco ID

Is there any chance you could find out where these fish were collected (assuming they’re wild)? That would help with ID. In any case, care requirements are the same: clean water and lots of wood! Be prepared for lots of filter-clogging saw dust poo. I use pre-filters or sponges over filter inlets in...

They’re gorgeous! I’m thinking that of the possibilities suggested, seems the best match and also most likely to turn up in the trade (apart from L397, but yours don’t look orange enough for that species).

The common bristlenose plec () come in many selectively bred forms, like your yellow long fin and plain brown ones, but they are all the same species so they can freely interbreed in the same way that different breeds of dog can.

Re: IUCN Red List info in the Cat-eLog?

It is worth noting that until recently very few freshwater species had been assessed. There has been a drive in recent years to address this (and other biases). I've been involved in some of this for the Sundaic freshwater fish (together with Silurus and many others) where about 1/3 species ended up...

Unless they could find out more details, like catch location, or get photos, it is hard to predict what species would turn up.
I’ve seen in Borneo turn neon blue on occasion. Perhaps other species do this too.
