Good to see they are thriving and obviously breeding; keep up the great work. I've learned a lot from you over the years and hope you are doing well.

Re: L046 Biotype Small fish ideas

I keep mine with Pencilfish [Nannostomus marginatus and N. unifasciatus] and Hatchetfish [Carnegiella strigata and C. schereri] without issues and the L46 breed. Both of these genera of fish are docile and rather shy. They do not compete with the food that sinks to the bottom the way Tetras do. Then...

Re: L173 Spawn

I had just settled into my Sunday maint. routine starting with the 173 tank. I have had one fry out in the trap for almost a day. Dad is protecting others. I had just finished vacuuming the sand in the right half of the tank when I spotted a fry on the front glass. I am almost 100% certain this was...

Re: Sexing Zebras

L46 are difficult to sex; you can look at the same fish 3 times and second-guess yourself every single time. Males are always easier to spot; but sometimes the sexual dimorphism between the two sexes can overlap. Behavior within the aquarium is usually an easier indicator, IMO. First one is a defini...

Re: Lava rock

I agree, seems like dynamite in the wait. I mean if we use it remove callus skin then I'm sure it will make short work of an unsuspecting fish that bumps into.

I'll look for more rounded, smoother rock this weekend.

Lava rock

Is it safe to use as decoration/rock-work or is there a risk it will injure the plecos?

Re: L14 Died. Help with diagnosis please.

How long ago did you setup this aquarium? There shouldn't be ammonia or nitrite in well-established aquarium unless something happened to kill of the bacteria. Did you dose any medications or change your display (ie. move rocks, plants, etc.)? I see why; a lot of fish in a small tank and you reduced...

Re: L46 - what sex?

The only surefire way is by venting the Zebras; because sometimes it is hard to discern - none of the fish above show signs of a dominant male (ie. wide triangular head and odontodes)

2 males and 1 female. Can you get close-ups from above of each one?

Re: L46 Zebra Pleco Breeding Group - Need help sexing them

1. I see 2 definite males; I think the one above the male on the left is also male. The 3 on the right grouped together all look to be female. 2. $400 per fish is pretty pricey; have they bred? 3. People rarely give up females; they are the breeders. 4. It's hard to find buyers for males; so what yo...

Do you guys use UV sterilizers on your central systems? I'm setting an L-system this month and want to invest in UV. But want to know what everyone else does?

Re: Water changes

Invest in a controller like an Apex. It can monitor/control temperature and do AWCs amongst the various other capabilities it has. I have a common sump for 8 20L's. Soon I'll add a 40w UV sterilizer to the setup. I have an Apex for my L-setup in the garage and it's the best piece of equipment I have...

Re: Video of P. leopardus Spawn

Such a shame to lose such a valuable spawn. Why not tilt the cave back? It seems declined towards the front.

Is the cave large enough for them to both maneuver inside? They seem very large; but I'm ignorant as I only have experience with breeding Hypancistrus sp.

Yes, the first spawn is usually a failure and the male usually will get it right the second time - unless he's a serial egg eater.

And regarding those 15 queens, how many different females were involved- I presume at least a different one for each clutch the male was on all at one time. That is still genetic diversity. smile1 Somewhat, but all the offspring share the same father. If I was to split the group into five trios and...
