Re: My Public Aquarium: exhibit blues - how to make them?

From what I could see it looked like the smaller Paroon got that 3rd piece.

I agree with dw1305, I would darken the tank overall, create some darker open areas with plants or plastic plants if you not good with real plants. I would maybe get a school of relatively calm dither fish. My 2¢

Re: My Public Aquarium: exhibit blues - how to make them?

Great info on the Thiaminase Viktor. Thanks much.

Regarding your latest post: maybe you can cut it into smaller pieces and see what happens, or try some large earthworms to just get them some much needed minerals?

Re: My Public Aquarium: exhibit blues - how to make them?

So sorry to see you lost the big Piraiba, my condolences. But what a gain in knowledge. I've never liked feeding salt water organisms to freshwater organisms as they would, for the most part, never encounter that biology in their natural environment. But I've never had scientific proof to support th...

Re: Leaf Litter Loricariidae

Thanks for the info Shane, and that was a great story. Really painted the picture of a smaller dry-season creek (or "cano"?). I have most of those things you mentioned already in place but this tank is an attempt at breeding a rare tetra (Hyphessobrycon jackrobertsi). The group is wild-cau...

Re: Leaf Litter Loricariidae

Thanks Jools, the L. brinidellii is excellent, but a bit too big for the 40g they would be going into. The C. elegans is a good suggestion, are there any other forest cories I could be looking at?

Leaf Litter Loricariidae

Does anyone know of any of the smaller loricariids that prefer living in leaf litter?

Re: My Public Aquarium: exhibit blues - how to make them?

Viktor, what if you pull her out and isolated her in a fry holder or something in the same tank? That way the males can beat up on the container instead of her until her hormones drop off. These are artificial systems we set up; in the wild she may not encounter quite this amount of harassment? I me...

What other fish do you have in the tank? Also, shining a red light and watching after lights out can reveal a lot. my 2¢

Re: My Platydoras is too big

Given everything is 'normal' in your tank and with the fish, you should not have any problem putting your Platydoras on a diet. Many catfish her size can go 4-5 days without food no problem.

Thank you all. First I will try the centrifuge technique, then the freezer. I have heard of the freezer trick Eric but this will be the first time I try it myself.
