Re: Self-restraint failed

Nice get, Eric :-) I have never been a big joiner of clubs. orgs., etc. over my life. Even online you can basically count om your fingers the places on the internet on which I am a registered user. I resisted joining one of my local fish clubs for years as well. But that ended several years ago. Eve...

Re: Small fish that snack on snails

They reproduce a lot faster that folks think, The babies go into the substrate to hide while they grow. Rake through the substrate and see how many turn up. About 5 - 6 years ago I started with 15 assassins, Since then I have sold or given away hundreds. I started with them in the tank pictured. I n...

Re: Small fish that snack on snails

I can confirm that sidthimunkis will eat small snails. I have kept them for about 15 years now. They cannot eat larger ones. My clown loaches, when smaller would eat all size snails. however, they are now pretty big and I stopped dropping pond snails into their tank as I believe they suck the snail ...

Re: Some interesting Hypans

I have posted about these fish in some other threads I started since the last post here until now. Just for the sake of resolving some things here is followup. The tank appears to be female heavy. I have had two or possible three males spawning. The alpha is always in the same cave. However, the oth...

Re: Need advice from rare pleco breeders, please.

Thanks @Mexnotex I have actually used that divider trick before. I used a sheet of Poret foam to divide the tank. I posted pics in this thread https://www.planetcatfish.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=5&t=42173&hilit=l236 You will see later in that thread a heater failure wiped out that tank. That same ta...

Re: L-46

When I had a similar issue I discussed it with two internationally renown pleco breeders at CatCon 2016. They asked what was I doing differently now v.s. what I was doing when they were spawning like crazy. In my case the answer was simple when I thought about it. Having had such great success the f...

Re: Need advice from rare pleco breeders, please.

My babies always come out during water changes. the problem is the way I layout my pleco breeding tanks is there is a ton of cover. Often the only way to nab a fry becomes a siphon. I also sometimes nab them using a brine shrimp net. The problem with wither method tends to be that I kill some. The l...

Re: RTC migration in the Xingu

I managed to read a bunch of this paper. Am I correctly interpreting things when I conclude from what I read that these Xingu migration behaviors are now basically blocked by the Belo Monte complex?

Re: Need advice from rare pleco breeders, please.

I still have not gotten the bottle, I keep forgetting when I go grocery shopping. I did grab 8 mostly tiny fry yesterday doing tank maint. Unfortunately, I dinged one and it did not survive. I still spot plenty more in the breeder tank. The alpha male has not spawned again, yet. The #2 male is on cl...

Re: Aquaculture parameters for Hypancistrus zebra

I was sent a copy of the paper. I came to many of the same conclusions as @Narwhal72 above. In one experiment they use 180 zebras. In another they used 108. Aall were juveniles. So they could have overlapped. In the third experiment, to determine food preferences, they used 8 adults. Cost of diet re...

Re: Aquaculture parameters for Hypancistrus zebra

Another interesting paper I cannot read :( I would love to see their design, methods and time frames. However, I think it would only be of real interest to a professional aquaculture operations. Based on the abstract I have a bunch of questions as to how the information might benefit hobby/home bree...

Re: Greetings

For now my best advice would be patience. However, if you find you need to be taking a more active approach towards encouraging spawning, you may have an issue with the temperature requirements down the road. If you have to do a full blown dry/rainy, the final part of the dry season can see water te...

Re: Need advice from rare pleco breeders, please.

A sump is not possible. This is the under tank an a two tank stand. But I discovered I had thrown out my bottle trap so I have put a couple of small bottles of water on my shopping list. Also, the alpha male's current spawn is almost free swimming and the #2 male is on new eggs that should be wiggle...

Re: When to release L183 fry back to main tank?

I should have mentioned. if I have to pull fry to a trap or grow tank, I will actually collect some poop from the breeder tank and put it into whatever is holding the fry.

Re: When to release L183 fry back to main tank?

I am with Chuck. I hate raising fry in traps and will only do it in unusual cases. I prefer to raise them in small grow tanks- 10 to 20L gal. max. depending on how many. I will do this when spawners are prolific and I need to spread out the kids. I pull the cave when the babies are close to being fr...

Re: Need advice from rare pleco breeders, please.

I have used those squash fry caves for a number of years. I rarely see any fry in mine, What I did learn is that my original 236 group prefers the large fry caves as spawning caves. They are the only Hypans I have kept which exhibit that preference. My second larger 236 group uses any and all shapes...

Re: Need advice from rare pleco breeders, please.

I actually have a bottle trap. But I did the full monty on it. I cut off the top, inverted it and then punched holes in both the bottle body and the inverted top piece. I then use small nylon wire ties to join the two pieces. Before doing this I add a couple of stones to insure the bottle stays in p...

Need advice from rare pleco breeders, please.

Years ago I lost 2/3 ongoing spawns of zebras when I had to break down the tank to pull offspring. I carefully pulled the caves to traps, did what I had two and put the tank back together in as close to the original configuration as I could. The next day the eggs and wigglers were gone. Only the alm...

Re: Is this whitespot/ich?

Research has shown that some fish which survive a bout of ich acquire an immunity to it. Some studies show this to be a shorter term immunity and others appear to indicate a longer lasting one. This could explain why some of the fish in a tank may not be affected even as the rest are seriously so. I...
