I take it you didn't check with the shop to find out where they came from?

Re: I cant find anything on my guy please help!!

It is Ancistrus sp(4) if it has black, blue or brown eyes - people call them different things depending on lighting conditions, personal opinion - typically incorrectly called L144, but there is no trace of the L144 since many years back - probably around 1995-1997 was the last record of a true L144...

Re: Sorting and searching members by geographic location?

Postal code can be used - IF we had it for all the users... (And as far as I know, this sort of information is available for most countries, and translating it to geographic location). Sorting on "Country, Region, Town" would work fine if everyone actually entered their place as "USA,...

Re: Sorting and searching members by geographic location?

That's a good idea. Shame it's not very easy to achieve... To solve it, would require quite a bit of work, and sometimes go very wrong, since there is for example no way to determine if Perth is in Australia or Scotland (unless the user actually specifies the country). And of course, whilst we encou...

Yes, I decided to add the 5 species that are in CoF/Fishbase/Loricariinae.com.

Yes, looking at the species in Fishbase and CoF, I noted their location and found that "Hmm, that doesn't seem very likely to arrive in the hobby anytime soon".

Dasyloricaria???

I was asked by a friend "Is Dasyloricaria a valid genus, since there's no entry for it on PC?", and I looked it up on CoF and Fishbase, both of which seems to say it is indeed a valid genus. It is also on Norman's Loricariinae page. Any particular reason it is not here? [I tried searching ...

Asian catfish placements...

We have a script that runs every week, and updates the subfamily for different species. It also reports inconsistencies between our data and the Fishbase/CoF data it references. So one day I went through to check the reports. This is a selection that I think we should look at: Rama chandramara shoul...

I had that same problem (which is caused by a separate limit in the site configuration file), which I've told Jools about. Should be sorted as soon as Jools gets round to changing that file and restarting the webserver.

Re: issues uploading "my species" photos

Yes, the new code is working as it should - it doesn't try to figure out what size the failed upload is, because it detects that the upload failed, and prints the error code for the failure. The error code 1 in this case means "file too large" - which in turn is related to one of the setti...

Re: issues uploading "my species" photos

I understand, it's much easier to just "convert as is", than to consider what it's for, etc. I use Linux and a software called Photivo to convert from RAW, and I set mine to 1000 pixels on the long side for online use - mostly because it means that it's not going to take too long to upload...

Re: issues uploading "my species" photos

Ok, so I managed to reproduce, and fix, the problem on my local copy of the DB. There was a bit of missing code handling "when we haven't succeeded in uploading the file", and I suspect that there's a setting on the official system that is limiting the uploads. I will discuss the details o...

Re: Rita in Auchenipterinae

[Wee footnote to Mats, where the subfamily exists as a genus, this doesn't quite work as expected. e.g. Loricariinae] I did notice that. Not sure what we should do there - they are not real, legitimate genuses, but at the same time, we use them as if they are, and "genus" has higher prior...

Fix for the underlying problem in this case in R1431 ("don't keep the subfamily when wrong species is found"). I'm not sure if there are any other genera that are wrong, and I suspect it's not that easy to find out, but will have a look at updating the update-script to fix that. In the mea...

I personally think that sentence becomes quite useless if it only distinguishes the species from the Scobinancistrus subgenus.

My vote would be to remove that entire sentence.
