Re: Explainations of the blog points system works.
I believe, and I'd like to expect, that it's the number of completed fields that determines points, not the length of the narrative answers or the number of food items beyond "one." If it was by length of answers, Heck, given that I'm so long-winded on the narrative answers, I should have ...

So here's a step-by-step description of the odd behavior mentioned previously (here: Bug(s) in the BLOG outputs and here: Re: Adding A Second Spawning Report ): Using my BLOG for Panaqolus maccus as an example, I started with 57 points and I had four foods listed as follows: Wood (dry / prepared) da...

Re: Sexing Panaqolus maccus? Spawning at last!
UPDATE: The oldest babies reached 6 months old this week, so I tore their tank apart and collected them all for a nice photo shoot. Of all the fry, between 30 and 40 have survived to this age (I had almost 50 back in November); not great survival in the parent tank, but not bad. The oldest and large...

Three more errors associated with BLOG edits
Hi Jools, I'm sorry to tell you this right after you fixed up the BLOG pages, but I was updating my BLOG for Panaqolus maccus tonight and I found a few problems - one a coding problem, one with images, and one simply a word substitution: Coding problem: When I click on the "Edit" button fo...

Re: L397 Rescpe and Tank clean in progress. Some advice?
Hi Teresa, If you're dealing with repeated rounds of increased aggression between tank mates, while you're trying to condition them to spawn, it would seem to me that rearranging their tank too often might only cause too much stress. I would think that you should either accept the aggression if it i...

Does anybody feed banana peel to their plecos? I ran a forum search and only found banana peels mentioned for worm colonies.
Thanks, Eric

I'm still waiting for my male, whom I bought with bristles already developed and whom I've had for almost exactly a year now, to develop bifurcate (spit) bristles. He's fathered multiple times, but still has only bristles formed as single strands.

Re: Adding A Second Spawning Report
Hi Teresa, The points are not straight forward, they are funny that way. As far as I can tell, you don't gain points by replacing preexisting data. Okay, so that's not the peculiar part. What is odd is that you can actually lose points if you add certain info, or so I have seen: In regards the food c...

Eric, seeing as it was a suggestion that you made, in the other two recent Ancistrus threads, gave you a mention, rather than putting it across as my own idea for a solution.:-) No harm, no foul. Besides, I didn't come up with that as an original idea; it's something that someone taught me in the 1...

Hi Jools, I noticed recently that you've added an enhancement to the BLOG data pages where we have some fields at the top of the page to record multiple spawns. Re: Foods for weird and wonderful (and I'm just strange) plecos!
Has anyone fed edamame beans (in hull or dehulled) to their plecos? Do the plecos like them? Are they too rich a protein source for vegetarian plecos when you're trying to condition them for spawning? Would you still be at risk of causing bloat, like can happen when over-feeding vegetarian plecos wi...

Re: Corydoras Panda swimming up and down glass
Um how do I cover enough bottom foraging ground for the corydoras if i add shelter? If i rehome corydoras, would pygmy corydoras be tolerated since they are more midwater(though I doubt it)? This is the challenge in a tank that size. If your Ancistrus is aggressive no matter how you furnish the tan...

Re: Almost certain that my ABNs have spawned.???
You'd think that hunger would be a pretty strong motivator, but not when the alternative is spawning: in some frog species, males can easily lose 10% of their body weight while courting females. And females lose a lot more, although that analysis is sort of cheating when you consider most of the wei...

Re: Almost certain that my ABNs have spawned.???
Although I don't have lots of experience with how different species of plecos behave when courting, from the few spp. I've kept, it is my impression that spawning plecos (and courting plecos) do eat less than plecos doing everyday things (not courting/spawning). Remember, most fish (including our pl...

I think this member is in the USA, and if so, Pier Aquatics won't be any help. But, I do see these occasionally even in our big-box pet stores (as much as I don't like their fish). They are also sold on Aquabid.com.Mol_PMB wrote:There are hundreds of them at Pier Aquatics at the moment.

Re: Agressive and wounded Ancistrus HELP!
If you do decide to remove the battered pleco, let it heal, and then you want to reintroduce it to the same tank, I advise you do it in this way: Remove wounded fish to a different tank and allow it time to heal its fins. Based on what I've seen in other injured fish, I see no reason here why you sh...

Re: Corydoras Panda swimming up and down glass
Since your tank is a "high" design and has a smaller footprint than a typical 15 gal, then maybe so - as Mol_PMB suggested, the tank bottom might be too crowded with bottom-dwelling fish. But if that option is problematic for you (e.g., you don't have another tank to move the Ancistrus to)...
