Apologies for now posting this sooner but I've been blissfully off-grid for the last three weeks.
Alongside the catfish were some other interesting fish, like this anabantoid Luciocephalus pulcher and this as yet nameless Nemacheilus loach

"44–45 vs. 49–56" for the anal fin ray count, no? So 50 would make it . Obviously I should have read the paper before I posted the first time!

@Silurus I just looked through your paper on Silurichthys ligneolus (https://www.researchgate.net/publication/261438764_Silurichthys_ligneolus_a_new_catfish_Teleostei_Siluridae_from_southern_Borneo_Indonesia) and I wonder now whether my fish were Silurichthys phaiosoma instead. I base this on the sh...

Re: Central Kalimantan black waters
Wow. What is going on there. Did it flood overnight or what? Yes, quite epic overnight storm. We had another one two days later and that bench with the boots on disapeared under water too. Since we spent much of our days wading through swamps anyway, a flooded camp didn't make that much difference ...

Yes let's see what Silurus thinks. Happy for you to use photos of course. Here's another one of the Silurichthys I caught them at night, swimming at the surface right in the middle of our flooded campJools wrote:Great to see that fish alive assuming the ID is correct.

Central Kalimantan black waters
The last couple of weeks I have been on an expedition into forest on the left bank of the Sungai Rungan, Central Kalimantan (Indonesian Borneo). The substrate there was peat of varying depth and the water in the streams was stained like tea with pH of 3.5 - 4. Unseasonally heavy rain caused flooding...

Re: Peckoltia fry rejected
They must like it in your tank if they spawned this quickly. My first suggestion would be to add an airstone to the box. In my experience, P. compta often lay up to 40 eggs per spawn so hopefully there are still many in the cave.

This is actually as benign as it gets because it had been exceptionally dry. After rain, the river rises by several meters and turns into a raging brown torrent within a few hours.bekateen wrote:Wow, that current in the Gastromyzon video must be pretty strong!

So then is what is being said then that the zebras and the wormline species have no common ancestor in the past. Is this paper saying there is clear genetic evidence showing that the wormlines plecos in the Xingu are not related to zebras at all but are likely all the same species. I understand the...

Re: 12 Habrosus Corydoras barbels
With clean water and generally healthy living conditions the barbels should grow back. From what you write, I'd say your most immediate concern is a filter that is not yet mature so you will have to keep a very close eye on water quality and restrict feeding to a minimum. Secondly, as you are aware,...

I was surprised to find this 20cm goby this far inland in the headwaters. But then again, what do I know? The first specimen regurtitated a semi-digested Rasbora after it was captured. Locally it is known as "ikan pasir" which means sand-fish. Going by Inger and Chin (1962) I'd call it Glo...

Isn't there the book on the freshwater fishes of western Indonesia and Sulawesi by Kottelat et al. (1993)? That said, a (very much) revised edition is in the works (I think I am supposed to have a hand in it). I tried but failed so far to get hold of a copy of this book. I contacted Maurice Kottela...
