Re: What Pleco should I get?

Hi, 2x L201s ...and pickup next week a colony of L066s ... (otherwise we'd really love to get some L046s). ... I was thinking the L129s might be alright please don't keep different types of Hypancistrus in the same tank. They can and will crossbreed. I would rather separate the L 201 and the coming ...

Hi Eric,
bekateen wrote: 20 Jan 2018, 17:17 Is it an existing L-number?
as mentioned already in the abstract it's most similar to Spectracanthicus immaculatus.
I don't know any L number that would fit.

Re: Reevaluation of Guyanancistrus

Hi Erik, as you can see from the key to the genus there are no new species with distinct spots on body and fins. The L numbers known for Guyanancistrus from the affected areas all have distinct spots. - L 221/L 223 from Rio Paru - L 317 from Rio Jari There are two more numbers: - L 56 from Rio Aragu...

Re: how would i tell if there hybrids?

Hi, most of those whiptails are considerd to be hybrids. But afaik it's not absolutely clear if the "pure" red whiptail is a wild form or rather an aquarium strain obtained by selection. Very often you will find hybrids with R./H. lanceolata which are red as juveniles but when growing the ...

Re: Hypostomus velhochico, new species, Loricariidae

Hi Eric, no, this should not be the same. L 284 does not have spots on the belly and a quite different body shape. In L 284 the distance of pectoral to pelvic fins is much bigger than the distance between the two pectoral fin insertions (in H. velhochico nearly same). The dorsal fin is also shorter....

Re: What type of whiptail catfish?

Hi,

ok, then this is not an argument in favour of H. parva but rather against.
The lower filament can also be missing / broken, but I guess it will be a different species then.
Without knowing their origin it's very difficult to ID whiptails.

Re: Corydoras ID please

Hi,

yes, it looks pretty much like Corydoras trilineatus even though the midlateral stripe usually is much more prominent. Is only one looking like this or has the complete group this untypical pattern ?!

Another option might be Corydoras copei.

Hi,

it looks like Hemiloricaria parva, but I'm not really sure.
With these pics it's difficult to say.
Do they have two filaments (top & bottom side) in the caudal fin ?

Re: Bought as C. Bilineatus San Juan Cory

Hi, Corydoras bilineatus would be extremely unlikely, as per my knowledge there are no commercial exports from that area (Bolivia, Rio Mamore drainage). Corydoras sp. "San Juan" is a trade name that is quite often used by exporters in Iquitos, Peru. Therefore I think it's safe to call them...

Re: Identification fish

Hi, Nice fish, it may be Hemiloricaria eigenmanni , because it has barred fins, and that is a commonly imported species. this is certainly not H./R. eigenmanni , the pattern of fins and body does not match. Beside pattern and general shape there is one unique criterion pointing towards H./R. parva ,...

Re: Cory burgessi, C121 or something else?

Hi, typical C 121 have the pattern of C. adolfoi , these have rather the pattern of C. burgessi . Therefore I'm reluctant to call these also C 121. Possibly a new CW number would be better. It would be interesting to know from breeders how variable is the offspring of C 121 with respect to pattern a...

Re: ID please? Mystery long nose corys at LFS

Hi Eric, ok, if both had this blotch then I would also rule out C. blochi . The other species that you mention can be found in nothern Peru / southern Colombia (Laetetia) , this makes CW012 quite possible. However, the pattern looks odd. But some saddle snouted species are quite variable in the patt...

Re: ID please? Mystery long nose corys at LFS

Hi Eric, it would be interesting to see more pictures when they are settled. Based on your picture I would say it's rather Corydoras blochi , but CW012 might also be an option. Re: Breeding of Corydoras

Hi, I'm doubting pretty much that the reason for spawning was lack of nitrogen/nitrate in the water. Otherwise most corys would have died out in nature ;-). In most of the natural habitats you will not be able to measure relevant quantities of nitrogeneous compounds, usually it will be much less tha...

Hi,

if I remember correctly P. maccus has more stripes (four to five vs. three) in the pectoral fins.
L 448 is much more common in the trade and stays smaller.

Hi, I'd go for Hemiloricaria parva which does have a bit of the look of a Sturisomatichthys . This species was/is quite often sold as St. foerscheri, which is an invalid trade name. For some time it was also named LG 6 before the identity was clarified. I'm quite sure that the ID Jools proposed is c...
