Re: Occurrence data: better to have it and be (slightly) wrong?
This is a great question/thread to start. Since I have been reporting a lot of the recent locality discrepancies, I'll chime in with my thoughts. They will be presented in a somewhat random order (except #1), but hopefully they stimulate discussion. Before I begin, let me answer your question: My fe...

Re: My spotted orange seam plecos: Hemiancistrus guahiborum (L106)
Thanks. Yes, so far they are looking good (maybe better?) with each passing day. What is surprising me most is that nearly all the poop I'm seeing is very dark brown, so I'm thinking that in spite of all the other foods I'm offering, wood is still the main part of their diet. They seem to only sampl...

Re: Tips and Tricks
Although I know some people think using a garden hose to refill tanks is a bad idea, I have a garden hose dedicated just for the purpose of draining and refilling my larger tanks. One thing I worry about is having fish, floating plants, and sand get sucked into the hose while draining the tank. To a...

Re: My spotted orange seam plecos: Hemiancistrus guahiborum (L106)
Thank you Teresa for alerting me to your concern. As I mentioned above, I didn't end up using the Melafix. Although there has been no time for the new plecos' pectoral spines to regrow, I can say that the bloody spine no longer looks bloody, and all of the fish are active with no signs of disease (o...

Synonym added (hopefully I did it correctly! ) And I submitted functional hyperlinks linking to the original description and to the 2015 generic revision, which should become visible under "References" on the CLOG page.

Those snails look pretty small. How large so you permit the snails to be? Is it that large adults will eat the eggs but small snails are unable to do so?

Hi Jools,
Thanks for getting to this so quickly, but I have bad news... The video you linked to is the wrong video. That hatching video is already linked lower down on the page. Now there are two copies shown of the same video.
Cheers, Eric

Hi Jools,
On the CLOG page, there is a video (http://www.planetcatfish.com/common/ima ... e_id=12635) listed among the images. But if you try to view the video, there is nothing there.

Re: My spotted orange seam plecos: Hemiancistrus guahiborum (L106)
UPDATE: This species is a very active species. In their quarantine tank, I'm finding all six fish out and about in the tank, exposed and easily visible, throughout the day with lights on. They will hide if they see me; but if I remain still, they scurry about the tank, skipping from rock to rock and...

Re: Live tips to save cory eggs
Thanks Francois! I've got too many of these snails in my bigger tanks already, and I hate them there (they tend to gather on the raw veggies I feed my plecos, so densely that the plecos don't try to eat the food!). Now I have an excuse to move them into my hatchery tank.

Re: Can this pleco be obtained in uk
I'm still confused. On the CLOG for L003 , the References section states, DATZ 12/1988, p 556-558. Aqualog matches DATZ. Aqualog labels the xanthorist variant L003a By contrast, there is no mention of a xanthorist variant of L103 on its CLOG page. Also, you mentioned "Kieser Pleco," which ...

Re: Live tips to save cory eggs
Do all Planorbus clean eggs? I've got a bunch of these snails in a tank with albino corys, and it was always my impression that the snails ate the eggs (because one moment, I'd see the snails on the eggs, and later the eggs were gone). I wasn't sure it was the snails eating the eggs because the pare...

Oh my goodness. Thursday morning I awoke to THREE banjos trying to spawn - two big gravid females and a male. This male is the same male which suffered from a cyst of aquarium sand in its gill cavity ( Help! Sick banjo catfish with cyst or growth ); at some moments in the video you can see a residua...

Re: Caves for Loricariidae catfish?
Yeah, wouldn't that be helpful? LOL I also asked that question before (here: Home-made pleco spawning caves ), and the answer I got was this: Generally speaking, there are no set rules for optimum size or shape. Of course the fish need to fit in the cave, but maybe not all the way (for some species,...

Those claro look pretty small, so I'd imagine that the 1.5 inch diameter bamboo sounds about right, and maybe even the 1 inch diameter bamboo might work too. I'm using the 1.5 inch diameter bamboo (and some 1 inch bamboo, also) for my clown plecos, my oil cats, and my new spotted orange seam plecos....

Agreed. It's very difficult to tell with certainty. That's why I'm taking the photos and videos of these albomaculatus now, when gender is not definitive, and likewise for my mature but out-of-condition guahiborum . These threads are collecting "early" observations, as discussed in an olde...

Re: Mustard spot pleco (Panaqolus albomaculatus) project
Here is the last new video of these fish: It shows each fish from a lateral view and a ventral view, with the bodies held out of water in air. Although I'm still unconvinced that ANY of these fish are definitely females, this out-of-air video reinforces my impression that the largest fish is a femal...

Yeah, I too am concerned the salt will hurt more than it will help. Don't use it on my advice. Use it only if someone with great experience affirms its use.

Re: New L397s appear to have whitespot (ick).
Sorry Teresa. I've said before I'm not knowledgeable about meds, but the heat is about right IMHO: 30-32C for ich. Can these fish handle any salt? Or will that kill L397? Oxygenation is critical at these high temps. And remove live plants so that they don't die from the drugs, salt, heat, etc., and ...

Thanks for the advice, Teresa. I'll give it a try. I'm not much of a resource on medications either, but I don't think melafix will hurt them. Now that they're in the QT tank, here are some photos of the tank with a few of the fish visible inside. You'll notice that the fish are a dark grey base wit...
