Re: Ancistrus sp. Albino X Albino Equals what?

we wouldn't be able to tell which gene was homozygous and which was heterozygous. Therein lies the biggest problem. We'd have to setup 10 or more breeding tanks to get a decent chance at producing aabb fry. If all the 500 fry end up being golden yellow rather than white, is it because aabb genotype...

P.S., Mine also appear to be pretty tolerant of nitrates, but they do NOT handle ammonia well at all.

Re: Which syno to go with Congo tetra?

I know I've expressed concern about the tap water in my town in terms of safety. But its parameters are pretty good - soft and neutral. And since I breed apistos, I run the pH even lower than that. From month to month, I've measured pH anywhere from below 6 (that's where the API test scale ends) to ...

Re: Feeding behavior of a South American parasitic catfish

This makes me wonder, why is it called parasitic. It is basically a predator which does not kill its prey, but which feeds from it while it is still alive ....Are all predators which keep their prey alive seen as parasites? Essentially, yes. A parasite is any organism that enters into a "long-...

Re: Which syno to go with Congo tetra?

One of the big branches in the tank does reach the surface so they would have somewhere to climb out if needed. Does your tank have a hood on it? If so, that should be safe, but if you have an lidless tank, that could be problematic. Although it's never happened to me at home (with my hooded tanks)...

Re: Which syno to go with Congo tetra?

If you want to mix up your ecosystem, you could add some dwarf African frogs Hymenochirus . There are several different spp. found in and around the Congo. They can handle a decent current, but they prefer slower water. They are fully aquatic, but occasionally gulp air, like Corys. I keep a few in m...

Re: Help with Cory ID's

I'm not the best at this, but Zoe looks a lot like my trilineatus . Magic mike appears to have a long snout, which rules out julii for me - I'm thinking Corydoras gomezi (compare your photo to this: http://www.planetcatfish.com/common/image.php?image_id=13441 . On the other hand, I see that in a cou...

Re: Ancistrus sp. Albino X Albino Equals what?

It is possible that a fish is homozygous for TWO of the albino mutations. I wonder if such fish would be snow white. If the parents you have really do possess albino mutations at different genes and were thus able to produce 50% brown, 50% albino F1* hybrid offspring (as predicted by the above post...

what was the highlight of CatCon for you?

Okay, all you folks who went to CatCon, please help those of us who couldn't go live vicariously through your experiences. How was it? What was the most interesting thing you learned? What was the most amazing fish you saw? What made it worth your while? What was the sale you just couldn't pass up?

Re: Large blister on upside down catfish

Mizner 13,
Sorry that you couldn't save it. Now that it's dead, can you try cutting into the blisters to determine if they are solid, air filled, fluid (water or puss) filled, or filled with parasites, then share with us what you find?

Get ready to break out the cigars, you're about to be a father! :-) (The cigar thing used to be a clichéd tradition in USA for dad to perform when a child is born, although not done so much anymore with changing opinions about smoking. If not also in the UK, then this comment probably didn't make se...

Re: Unable to delete photos from "My Cats"

Okay, thank you Mats. Yeah! I've successfully deleted the photo in question from the "My Cats" page. I don't know what time it is where you're at (just after midnight, I'm guessing), but if it's not the middle of the work day, I'd say you deserve a beer too. To your health! As to the other...

Re: Ancistrus sp. Albino X Albino Equals what?

There are several websites with Punnett Square calculators that you can use to play with different genetic combinations to figure out the % of each phenotype. One such site is http://scienceprimer.com/punnett-square-calculator.

Cheers, Eric

Re: Unable to delete photos from "My Cats"

Seems like a change I made in R1351 broke this (by converting the first character in the "delete this image" message was made into a capital). Fix in R1473 + R1474 for the same fix in my_aquaria. I know this is an international forum. The funny thing is, you're writing in English, and it ...

Wanted in USA - C141

Hi All, I have a lone C141 (I believe male, based on body width and pelvic fin shape) that I picked up by accident at a LFS in the Central California region; they had only one, so I can't get any more. Here are three photos of that one fish: C141.png unknown1.png unknown2.png If you have any C141 wh...

Jools, Birger, and Mattcham, all make great points. Find a role model to shadow. If you can't see yourself in their shoes for the next 20-30 years then you should look elsewhere. Narelle, would you consider the "potential boss" you mentioned to be your "role model" or mentor? Cou...

Re: Does CatCon travel?

When I was a child, I lived in Southern California and belonged to the "Tri-City Aquarium Society" of Riverside and San Bernardino Counties. I don't know if it still exists anymore (all Google results for it go back to the 1960's-1970's, which is when I would have been a member; nothing cu...
