Re: Corydoras IDx2
Hi,
I would tentatively also say C. napoensis and C. elegans.
CW008 looks also similar but to my experience this is unlike many other species in the elegans group quite uniform in colouration and has a more regular striped pattern.
C. nanus can be excluded by minimum 100% .

Re: Corydoras aeneus?
Hi, well, I kept C. melanotaenia quite a time ago and the extent to which they show the yellow colour can vary significantly and I do see yellow ventral fins which is not known for "standard" C. aeneus (which is not C. aeneus in sensu stricto) but there are definitely other forms of the ae...

Re: Corydoras aeneus?
Hi, it's definitely not C. aeneus in sensu stricto and I would not even call it C. aeneus at all but C. melanotaenia even though the fins are not so bright yellow to exclude all doubts... There are so many C. aeneus look-a-likes in South America. One thing is clear, it's a really nice shot of a nice...

Re: ID Elegans group cories
Hi, you will never find C. nanus (Suriname) or C. bilineatus (Bolivia) in ordinary pet shops, if you ever should be so lucky to find them in specialised shops they should be very much more expensive than other Corydoras . Both species are coming from countries from which there are no regular exports...

Re: What is a pleco?
Hi, another thing that IMHO is definitely wrong is this: common pleco (Hypostomus plecostomus) Hypostomus plecostomus is not at all common (in the hobby), but the so-called "common pleco" is regularly mis-identified as Hypostomus plecostomus which is more or less not available in the pet t...

Hi Eric,
perhaps you were refering to this one: CW132 ?
But I also think that B. splendens is more probable.

Hi, I share the doubts, IMHO the living ones are not P. mariae, the conserved ones look ok. Re: Which pleco is this
Hi, it seems that hybrids are much more wide spread than previously known and there is no reliable way to tell them apart from pure species if they are no wild caught specimen from South America (which is very unlikely). Hybrids can show the whole range of belly pattern from "typical pardalis&q...

Hi,
not sure if this is the right sub-forum for this.
Please feel free to use this picture in your DB:
The L number is based on my group, so 100% safe.

Hi, I have to look if I have pictures myself, if so (quite sure) probably not really good ones. They have spawned for the first time recently but nearly all eggs p...

Corydoras saramaccensis
Hi, pictures in the species page don't show Corydoras saramaccensis . If I remember correctly these were corys from the pet trade making this species already very unlikely but also the pattern does not match and also snout shape is wrong. Without having catching location it does not make much sense ...

Re: A new Corydoras species (Callichthyidae) from Rio Juruena basin, Brazil
Hi, the authors already stated that this species has features that don't really fit into the lineages, the snout is rather too long for lineages 6 & 9, their conclusion was that this feature would be rather typical for lineage 8. The tentative assignment to lineages 6 or 9 was based on pectoral ...

Re: Small Corydoras ID please
Hi, Corydoras sanchesi is extremely unlikely, those come from Suriname and there are barely any fish exports from there. Even if so, the prices are so high that those will never end up in standard pet shops as they are just too expensive. However, I also don't really know where Ian's cory actually c...

Hi,
yes, Steve is probably right. This should be CW115.
However, I'm surprised to see those in an auction, were there any commercial imports or has someone bred them ?

Re: What species of Ancistrus does my friend have?
Hi, well, there are countless Ancistrus species with dark colour and clear spots. Without knowing the origin it might be impossible to find out what it is. The two mentioned species however, can (most likely) be excluded. Unfortunately the most important detail is not visible in the pictures. It wou...

Re: Corydoras ID
Hi, as already correctly stated C 126 can be completely excluded, this number is a member of the elegans group. C. leucomelas is close but usually has a broader dark blotch. Also C 151 does not fit IMHO. I would rather suggest C 154 which can also be found in the trade quite often. However, this col...

Re: help for identification.
Hi,
second option would be H. boulengeri which has a greatly overlapping distribution.
The most evident criterion for differentiating those two is the snout tip (naked vs. fully plated) which unfortunately is not clearly visible on the pics.
Color pattern would be matching for both.

Hi,
this is Brochis splendens (or Corydoras splendens if you prefer), I count 12 branched dorsal fin rays. However, this is rather a species complex and I would expect that one days it will be split into several species.
Cheers,
Karsten

Re: which L number?
Hi, definitely a Hypostomus , but without any information about the origin those are close to impossible to ID. There are close to 200 species and forms, quite often with very similar pattern. And by far not all have a L number. There are many described species (that don't need a number) and also ma...

there are several similar species like Corydoras caudimaculatus and Corydoras guapore, but in fact the describing author was refering to Corydoras ourastigma which is the long snoutet companion.

Hi, well yes, corys of different species also shoal together in the nature, I guess with mimicry pairs this holds true even more. But I don't think that the TS was refering to mimicry pairs/trios. However, you can also observe in nature that Corydoras do have a clear preference for their own kind. M...
