If you new me you would understand the chaos but since you don't lets say "winging it" is the best way to describe my life and just life in general in my opinion I can read that with admiration, one fish guy to another, or I can read that as a parent of teenagers (which I am). This brings...

Re: Sexing Panaqolus maccus? Spawning at last!
Thanks, and you are right - they are almost ready to find new homes. I'm going to hold on to the largest to see how big they will grow by 6 months, in order to provide more growth data for the BLOG. With the other fish I've bred, I realized that I had a habit of giving them away or selling them befo...

Indeed 1 a male 2,3 and 4 female (Lucky bastard :) ) Rob, By "lucky bastard," are you referring to the lone male in a tank with three females? Or is this a statement of envy expressed towards @Mol_PMB because he is so lucky to have a mixed sex group of this beautiful Panaqolus ? =)) Eric

Eric in your experience with the maccus in terms of ratio of males to females how much is too many males Hi Teresa, Honestly, I'm not fit to answer that, as I have experience with so few plecos. But another member (@stuby) brought this issue up when I was trying to find the right foods to get my P....

Re: L397 sexing and breeding - now I'm not so sure
Regarding your feeding choices, they sound safe to me - nothing too rich. Regarding the possibility of 1 male and 3 females, I was told about my P. maccus that too many females can interfere with mating. But in your case, I don't know if three is "too many" for one male. The other things I...

Here are my bristlenose juveniles feeding on raw sweet potato and a boiled Brussels sprout. The veggies are all impaled on a bamboo shish-kabob skewer, which is mounted in a plastic clip to the wall of the tank to prevent the veggies from floating. In this photo the Brussels sprout appears to be mor...

Re: Sexing Panaqolus maccus? Spawning at last!
Here's a couple of the fry (not the largest, but the largest I could catch) photographed during a recent tank cleaning. After all the spawns (some of which I made no effort to salvage fry), I have somewhere between 35-50 juveniles of various ages, from 2 weeks - 3 months old. (Note: The green stuff ...

I don't know about them being Hypancistrus inspector . According to its description, H. inspector should have a distinct black margin on its dorsal and caudal fins. And although your photos of your fish from the side are not the best, I don't see any sign of a black margin on those fins. When your f...

Ah well, perhaps I've just been looking after them too much! They are all a bit tubby... ;) As long as it's due to eating lots of wood and veggies, "tubby" is good! (it may indicate gravid females) My female maccus were REALLY ball-shaped by the time they started breeding. :-BD IMO, "...

Re: Greens are good for u-and for plecs?
So maybe I should try out different foods? Yes, try out a variety of fresh veggies. But if you want to be purposeful about it, I would treat the fish like human parents treat newborn babies: Introduce only one vegetable at a time and see if they get used to it. As mentioned above, I would keep feed...

Okay, eventually I clicked on the maps for all 22 fish listed along the Purus and here is what I found: Every species with more than one "Distribution" occurrence works (i.e., displays occurrence data as markers on the Google Map): Brachyplatystoma capapretum Corydoras sp(c078) Gladioglani...

Re: Faulty Distribution map display for Corydoras schwartzi
Hmmm. I encountered the same problem with Corydoras evelynae . Both this species and schwartzi have the Purus as their only locality. I wonder if that might be part of the problem - maybe it's not the species giving us issues, but it's the Purus as a single location. By comparison, I clicked on some...

I've used raw sweet potato, raw celery, raw bell pepper (but remove the seeds first, they are probably TOO SPICY), raw beets, raw carrots, raw broccoli stems (cut into 1-2 cm long segments; I've seen others use the broccoli tops, but I haven't tried those), raw cucumber, raw zucchini (courgette), an...

When my P. maccus eventually bred, I didn't even need to use the water changes - by simply ignoring them and giving them privacy (the tank almost entirely wrapped in black paper), they eventually spawned... And once they started, they wouldn't stop: Re: Sexing Panaqolus maccus? Spawning at last! . S...

Re: L397 sexing and breeding - now I'm not so sure
Hi Paul, I have lots of caves but I wonder if they're big enough. As long as the fish can fit their body in the cave, "too small" a diameter should not be a problem, based on my experience with P. maccus and ABNs; in fact, I think my males prefer narrower caves because they provide more se...

Based on odontodes and body girth, I'd GUESS #1 male, #2 male(?), #3 and #4 female. But that's not based on any personal experience with L397, just based on my experience with P. maccus.
Good luck, Eric

Maybe it was lost in the translation, but none of my fish like to eat the skin of the potato. I remove the skin before adding the raw sweet potato (usually as 3-4mm thick slices) to my tank.shrimpkeeper222 wrote:Sweet Potato Skin(Raw)

Re: Possible ammonia spike. Update lost 1 fish. Advice needed.
With my Panaqolus maccus, they get mostly wood to eat, with just the occasional sweet potato or algae wafer added as a supplement. The poop they make is so nutrient poor that the snails in my tank barely survive as a population - I see a few snails but they just aren't getting enough food to explode...

Hi Teresa, Sorry to hear about your pleco dying. I hope the worst is over. Oh my! Indeed, I bet this is one of the most common "worst mistakes" any long-time fish keeper will be guilty of. :-). In my teenage years, my brother and I did that to our bedroom while using a garden hose to fill an aquarium. What is it about distraction?!? LOL I'm sure I would have done...

Hi Shrimpkeeper222, You've picked some nice fish there. Thanks for the frog information; yeah, I figured that the frogs were not the priority, but I was just hoping to get lucky with more pics.
By the way, it's always a good idea to stay away from kraits and cobras... As a herpetologist, that's my two cents.
