Hi Mark,
I'd go for the diagnosis of S. sorex. I double checked in Daget's "Les Poissons Du Niger Superieur", and to my mind your fish fits the given description almost perfectly.

large catfishes
Hello all. A note was made regarding a talk (kind of a late night blabber)that I gave at the Catfish Convention. The presentaion was admittedly negative towards the keeping of potentially LARGE catfishes in the aquarium. But, I would like to make a small clarification on the previous post. I am not ...

Jerry Miranda - RIP
Hello all, My apologies for a double post, but I thought that a separate note in this forum might be warranted, and fitting. Jerry Miranda, who has contributed a good volume of materials dealing with Synodontis on Planet Catfish, passed away about two weeks ago. His contributions to Planet Catfish a...

Good morning Silurus. Based on the extremely limited information on the natural diet of Amaralia (loricariid eggs) it might be interesting to try some fish eggs on your fish. Do you happen to be breeding any Ancistrus? You might try getting out to a local fishing hole and seeing if someone has caugh...

Hi Fish Tank and all, Re leaves in aquaria: Granted, anything organic is going to break down over time. But the leaves mentioned in my initial post do seem to take their time for such things and I have never experienced any problems of note. Of course, regular water changes coupled with some bottom ...

Banjo cats and sand
Hi all, In relation to another post (which appears closed) dealing with banjo cats and sand: While a very fine sand is an option for a substrate for these fishes another good option is the use of leaves. From what experiences I have had collecting banjo cats (in Brazil and Peru) they were usually fo...

frog marble cat
I certainly agree with the caveat regarding tankmates for this species. I had one around three or so inches long that ate (head first) a whiptail cat that was approx. four inches long. It took it as far as it could (a good portion of the unlucky loricariid was just sticking out of the mouth) and the...

Hi all, There was something published a number of years ago regarding potential wound healing and/or antimicrobial effects of the slime of some ariid catfishes...in the Arabian Gulf (?). Hi Paul - I see, and know, what you mean. Been there, do that. Heok Hee - Thanks for jumping in again with some good comments. The group (clade) to which Britto assigns former Brochis spp. also includes C. aeneus, C. zygatus, C. rabauti and C. eques. Should future analysis further confirm and cement...

Hi Paul and all, Paul: As you note there are certainly a number of points to be considered. My comments were based on Britto placing Brochis as a synonym of Corydoras and then making the assumption (there is that word) that he had checked out potential priority problems. The name Corydoras dates to ...

The resurection of Scleromystax by Britto has received the lion's share of the comments in this thread, but other items in his paper are also very interesting and of possible interest to the community herein. One of these is the placing of Brochis in synonomy with Corydoras. So, via Britto we now ha...

Hello all, It is nice to see that someone remembers the illustrated article(s) that I did on some apparent reproductive behavior in S. brichardi. Thanks. Another new Otocinclus
Hello all -
For those keeping up with such things a new species of Otocinclus is described in the newest issue of Copeia (2002, No. 4). The species is named O. tapirape and it is from the rio Araguaia system of central Brazil (state of Goias).

Hello all, this is my first posting. I am happy to be on the forum. I have been laying low for a while. Thanks Dave R. for letting me know about it.
