Re: Hoplo ?
Good 2nd question Bijn. CRKinney and all, are these native in FL??? For some reason, perhaps my ignorance, I'd be very surprised. I'd think if you catch them in the wild in FL, they are the descendants of some illegal releases :( . Isn't their motherland, or should I say motherwater, South America? ...

Thanx, Amanda. Cape Coral is around the corner. If the water, you caught your channel cats in, is as brackish as mine... ... then what I interpreted as discomfort (kind of restless swimming around instead of hiding right away) from testing my raw well water with channel catfishes might have been due...

Good job. I love these dairy-like accounts on one fish. Very clear and informative for all. Keep us posted, please.

Is this bacteria like any algae needing warmth, nutrients (sulfur compounds in this case), and light to grow? Or does it grow in the absence of light too?

wish could help but hope other syno experts will chime in, like Birger, Silurus, Sid Guppy, etc. Richard B is one of the top experts.
what do YOU think of the schall proposal?

Re: my well water in Naples FL
Thank you much, Joe. So we are drawing water from different aquifers - it must be, because my pH is 7.2-7.4. My API droplet test cannot distinguish between NH3 and NH4, and, as I wrote above, I suspect my NH3 is also at zero and what it is reading is all NH4 (0.5 ppm), but I have not proved it or di...

Hi Joe, looks like we will be neighbors! Thanks for the input. I wonder what that importer keeps in his tanks. Would it be a 1 min thing for you to dig up their name/number? Buckingham is farther east from the Gulf so maybe their water is less salty. Your water may differ from mine too - 40 miles is...

Water table is ~2-4 feet below the ground in Nov-Jun (10" of rain) and above (!) the ground in Jul-Oct (60" of rain). You know, it is pretty much part of the Everglades. Only elevated parts stay un-submerged. One of the well guys who gave me an estimate mentioned the existence of equipment...

Re: my well water in Naples FL
Thanks, gents. Yeah, I forgot to mention pH. It is 7.2-7.4 by two independent, different measures. The RO system I am pondering right now is $4000-$5000 and produces only 2350 gal per day (when new, as the membrane ages, the output will keep decreasing!). The price scales exponentially with output. ...

my well water in Naples FL
Hi All, Don't know if this is the right forum. So we are finally moving into our new home. Just tested the raw water from an ~100 foot deep well - mid-Hawthorn aquifer. Our house is ~10 miles from the Gulf of Mexico shore. (1) TDS shows 1250 ppm - low end of brackish. ~500 ppm out of 1250 are CaCl2 ...

Interesting info and I love seeing so much consistency, which means the (scary) trend is general.
My tig is still ~10". Hope to see yours tomorrow, Giuliano! I've never seen such a big one in life yet.
Edit: correction, gmoney78 was talking about a TSN-RTC hybrid; never mind my post then

Macat33, there is info in Cat-eLog as Silurus said and Giuliano offered his experience. It's not often that people would give you a written lecture on any particular fish based on one line inquiry. There are links in the Cat-elog entry for you fish (Leiarius marmoratus) to the FishBase and others. T...

Re: Two questions, one thread. Electric catfish ID and Syno.
Are you saying nobody gave you any good clues yet? I wish I could. The only thing I can tell you is that my e-cat is very, very similar looking, and I always assumed it was a M. electricus (without any good grounds), but the snout on yours looks longer, more stretched out. Do you want a photo of my ...

I doubt Giuliano will read this but I spoke to him on the phone just now and he does not want to give his fish to any store, even as great as Shark Aquarium, Hillside, NJ, because he wouldn't know who will buy them then. He wants to make sure they will be taken best care of. Very admirable on my sca...

Ah, the picture that's worth almost a 100 words. Next time, make it a full body shot in your 3-piece Armani, Cardin tie, DeLorenza lizard shoes and a plastic sack with hand nets sticking out in one hand and the other holding another plastic sack with fish bags. Now that could account for a 1000 word...

So it would seem Pictus and Ruby Sharks don't go together. I believe you and Mats 100%. Still, IME, I've learned and am still learning every day the great danger of generalizations. In my 55 gal, I've had 7 ruby sharks, better known around here as rainbow sharks, 2 red tail sharks and 2-5 pictuses ...

Not at all undermining Mats' experience, I'd agree with you, Ryan, based on my experience. My pictuses, which I had up to 6 at some point, are always very active and inquisitive. That's the way I've usually seen them at LFSs, where tanks lack any hiding spots. They could hide too, no doubt, and I do...

Welcome theviper06! A pic would really help. Fresh heater burns look nothing like scars, scratches or other skin abrasions. They are big, wide, oval/roundish in shape and deep. Mats is right but I must add that my three big euptera rarely hide all day long. But then, the tankmates matter. Etc. Perha...
