Re: How to get Farlowellas in the mood ;)

TWIGLET! :)

Most of the eggs haven't hatched yet, but one clearly has and here is the baby twiglet!
It's 10mm long and apart from the odd wiggle of its tail I haven't seen it move yet.

Re: Which syno to go with Congo tetra?

That sounds very similar to my water in most tanks :) In my true blackwater tanks I use peat filtration to soften it further (and I currently have both Dicrossus filamentosus and Farlowella vittata breeding) but I wasn't planning to go to such extremes in the Congo tank. Indeed I added a little bica...

Re: Which syno to go with Congo tetra?

Many thanks for all the info. This tank does have an enclosed hood so they could be an option :)
They do look very cute. I guess they like the same sort of water as the Congo fish (soft, slightly acidic)?
I'll see if I can find any at my local suppliers.

Re: Which syno to go with Congo tetra?

Thanks - I'll look into them. They sound interesting :) One of the big branches in the tank does reach the surface so they would have somewhere to climb out if needed.

Re: Which syno to go with Congo tetra?

Update: I have finally got around to re-scaping this tank and getting my first synos. In the end I chose to get: 6 Synodontis nigriventris and 1 Synodontis flavitaeniatus I must say, I'm very pleased with them so far and they seem to have settled in. Thanks for all the advice. Re: How to get Farlowellas in the mood ;)

I'd just written that post, and went to check the eggs. One of them is empty! (see pic) Does that mean it's hatched already? They were only laid on Monday.

Re: How to get Farlowellas in the mood ;)

Get ready to break out the cigars, you're about to be a father! :-) Thanks :) Dad's still guarding them, the babies are still growing inside the eggs, and no more have turned white. I've been keeping tropical fish about a year, but it's taken off in a big way and I have several tanks now. Apart fro...

Re: Piggyback - just cute or should I worry?

Ah, OK, I searched for 'Oto slime' and found a load of stuff. I'm hoping it was just that the Oto was newly introduced to the tank, and suckered to the first tasty thing it found. All 3 Otos are now on leaves, wood or courgette so I hope they'll settle in and it won't happen again. If I do see them ...

Piggyback - just cute or should I worry?

I have just been moving some of my fish around between tanks. I have put 3 Otocinclus vestitus in a tank with my two Hemiodontichthys acipenserinus . The whiptails are very laid-back fish - they seem to be eating OK and they move around from time to time, but they're not very active. Sometimes I eve...

Re: How to get Farlowellas in the mood ;)

So, Mr Farlowella is still carefully guarding his eggs, though he left them while I did a small water-change. But I noticed yesterday evening that one of them had gone white. I decided to remove it, and it was much more difficult than I expected. As well as being stuck to the glass, the eggs are stu...

Re: How to get Farlowellas in the mood ;)

I was just going to do a small water-change in this tank (planning small ones every couple of days with the Farlowella eggs in there) but as I approached the tank I saw a male and female Dicrossus together in the coconut cave, and the little female head-butting the side of a second male that was try...

Re: How to get Farlowellas in the mood ;)

Thanks Darrel :) Dad is still guarding the eggs constantly. He did leave them unattended for a couple of minutes to grab a bite to eat when I fed the tank, but was soon back at his post. I think there are 36 eggs and so far they all look the same. ImageUploadedByTapatalk1413318238.609493.jpg ImageUp...

Thank you :)

Here they are, caught in the act last night.
They went on to lay some more eggs and the male is guarding them this morning.

Update: the male and female are on the glass together right now and have laid about 20 eggs so far :)
I've been away from home for the last 5 days so maybe they just needed some peace and quiet to get them in the mood?

Re: Which syno to go with Congo tetra?

Many thanks again :) If I get the Ctenopoma ansorgii I was thinking of getting several of them, maybe 5 or 6? Would that work or are they like Gouramis where you can only have one male? Re: Which syno to go with Congo tetra?

Thanks! That seems like quite a lot of synos for the tank size, but I suppose not much different to the number of Cories I have in there at the moment (they are moving elsewhere).

Re: Which syno to go with Congo tetra?

In a 36x18 tank, why not go for a group of either, congicus, flavitaeniatus, or nigriventris with some small african barbs & ctenopoma - this has the potential to be a stunning set-up Thanks :) I do like this idea - the Ctenopoma are particularly interesting fish and having seen them in the sho...

Re: Which syno to go with Congo tetra?

To be honest to see these Phenacogrammus interruptus at their best I would not go less then a 48 inch length...mostly for the before mentioned runs when spawning which is the best part of having these, the males run back and forth together in bursts of speed, fins spread.....even with 48 inches of ...

Many thanks for the suggestions. I found that Fishbase lists the Malebo/Stanley pool as a habitat in its own right, and the Synos listed as living there are as follows: Synodontis acanthomias Synodontis alberti Synodontis angelicus Synodontis caudalis Synodontis congicus Synodontis contractus Synodo...

Hi Birger,

Many thanks for that quick and helpful response. The looks a good size and very compatible. And it looks like they're in stock at Aqualife Leyland so I might have an excuse for a trip up there soon :)

Which syno to go with Congo tetra?

Hello All! I'm planning a new tank with a Congo river theme. I'm keen to make a shoal of Congo tetras the centrepiece. Of course, being a catfish lover I'd like to include one or more catfish. I understand that the Congo river basin is massive and very varied in character, and looking on the cat-e-l...

Sadly he died this morning. I can't find any gaps in the heater guard where he could have got a burn and I'm rather baffled. Re: What's wrong with my Blue Phantom?

Thanks. I did consider that, but the heater is guarded. I'll have a closer look and see if there are any gaps in the guard.
If it is a burn, are there any treatments to help it heal?
