Re: Marc's fish room build
too bad you are not in the states, there is a company called Tripp Lite that makes 120 volt inverters (someone else might be interested)that keep the batteries charged and then automatically switch over when the power goes out and then when it comes back on the go into charge mode, top the batteries...

Synodontis Petricola Sickness?
i have a problem with some S. Petricola. They are very old (17 years, at least ) but they have never done this before They have taken to swimming at the outlet of a fairly small sized power head that is situated maybe 10 inches from the waters surface. At first it was one but then they all got into ...

thanks but no need for prayers, i don't believe in a god that would allow people and animals to be used and abused by the hundreds of thousand (for fish and animals in the hundreds of millions)

Re: The hybrid Syno thread
wouldn't want to be any of your pets, they are there for your use, whatever that might be? that's what it sounds like to me you still missed the point about pulling fish out of the wild. research is one thing, that's not what i am talking about and you know that's not it. how many fish are needed to...

Re: The hybrid Syno thread
keeping any live animal captive, to some degree, is cruel no matter how you try to justify it. concrete is not living no matter how you many words you move round and i can't see how that even came up :-J pulling them out of a stream to transport them 4000 miles away to "captive" breed them...

Re: The hybrid Syno thread
for crying out loud you are comparing live fish to a creature that never existed, it's a story. fiction, and not very good fiction at that. we are talking about live creatures/ cross breeding happens all the time. Frankenstein? seriously? . he was made out of pieces of other men / women. how does Li...

Re: what type of synodontis
plus the fact that they are so pretty has a lot to do with it to. don't know 'bout cross the pond but here there was this trend some years ago that if you decorated a tank with corals and put in really colorful african cichlids people would assume that you had the expertise to maintain a real salt w...

Re: what type of synodontis
i asked a local retailer who deals with mostly high end fish and he said it is his impression (not fact ) that the hybids are hardier which would lend to them being easier to ship and better at surviving the shipping however i know of no hard statistics

Re: what type of synodontis
i can think of some reasons, they are more attractive has to be at the top. they are cheaper to produce, they handle shipping better, they are more disease resistant. i'm not kidding myself. they have to be making more money because these are attractive fish but i think there's room for everyone. th...

Re: what type of synodontis
but when you put two fish, male and female in to a tank to try to get them to spawn you are interfering in nature's process, to say that naturally ocurring hybrids are ok is really cutting it close. read Darwin's Dream Pond. it's about some of the stuff we are talking about. it says fish evolve to f...

Re: what type of synodontis
i think a more appropriate question would be: where do you draw the line. how many of the fish we consider standards were created by inbreeding or breeding with other species? 10,000 years ago? it seems to me that there are a lot of african cichlids in darwin's dreampond that are awfully and some th...

also they tend to panic when the lights go on if it has been really dark. my tanks are in the basement and i leave a light on all night because i have had fish bash into the glass and hurt themselves this way. cheaper to leave a light on. not tank light, just some light in the room. tank lights are ...

i lived in cambridge ma (USA) for about 10 years and was forced to buy an inverter and a couple of deep cycle marine batteries for my tanks. the inverter was a good one, tripp lite i believe and the batteries were good and i lost count of how many times that setup saved me from disaster, in the hot ...

Re: Breeding syndosis petricola
i had them breed for me about 10 years ago and i still have the same colony, they are just really old and have turned almost completely to a dark brown that's almost black. they spawned regularly until maybe 5 years ago. they are in a 150 gallon community tank and at this point they have stopped spa...

Additionally, why not give the fish more room to swim? why should they only have 60 gallons of room when there is 90 available? get an airstone or a circulation pump and fill it up! leave a little space in that tightly fitting cover. There are pictures of many tanks, plants have nothing to do with t...
