Gagata sp.

These specimens (looking ropey) had only one dark body blotch under the dorsal fin rather than the normal connected blotches on cenia. Any views on ID?

No problem. In my opinion the lower jaw is definitely longer, compare it with the new species in the paper

Hi. To me your fish are T.trachycorystes. The lower jaw is longer, the inner mental barbel is long and the skin over the cranium is not thick.

Re: Trachycorystes trachycorystes breeding....?

They look like Trachycorystes to me. Too long in the body for Liosimodoras in my opinion plus from the 3rd photo it looks like it has 8 branched ventral fin rays

Re: Trachycorystes trachycorystes breeding....?

It's difficult for me to see because Im viewing this on my phone but you can tell trachycorystes apart from liosomadoras by the former having 8 branched pelvic fin rays and the posterior edge of the dorsal fin spine smooth

Re: Unknown Microglanis

If you want to tie them in with aquarium identifications then they are M. iheringi. Whether the fish in the hobby are the true iheringi is yet to be resolved, but for your purposes you can call them iheringi.

Re: Lake Tanganyika Synodontis

A fishkeeper brought them in and insisted he got them from wild. There was a group of large grandiops and 2 of these mixed in. The smaller one did have the black triangles in the fins.

I've looked at Wright and Page and it says: "All rayed fins with small, dark spots similar to those on body. Juvenile specimens with black triangles at bases of rayed fins." The spotted fins (withn no black bases) can be seen on the drawing of an adult in Poll. The head profile and post cl...

Lake Tanganyika Synodontis

These were purchased yesterday on behalf of a friend. They are supposed to be wild caught. The first one looks like a semi-adult S. tanganaicae , the last one a female lucipinnis ? I'm now worried that the first one might be a hybrid though they are supposed to be wild caught. http://i143.photobucke...

Re: Longnose Corydoras & their...aggression?

If by longnose you mean what I would call hognosed (the acutus group etc) then the only ones Ive kept are sarareensis. The males were very aggressive with each other and would use their bristly pectoral fin spines and cheeks to spar with each other.
