Well, that's the end of Ancistomus then methinks. I wonder if this species is also L124, L75 - that would open the distribution up somewhat. Also, the paper mentions another big spot species which might be L163...

For my 2p that's a L134, but you'll never convince everyone unless you get clearer pics. I would say thouhg that from the shape of the fish it is no Hypancistrus and that rules out a few of the suggestions. It might just be some type of Panaque, but L134 is famously variable in terms of pigmentation...

For now, I'm lumping all these fish in as Synodontis sp(5). Perhaps they are all S. aterrimus, but the picture in Sands confuses the issue - maybe that is the real S. atterimus?

If they look like the pics of S. aterrimus in the Cat-eLog, I'd say they are most likely juvenile S. eupterus (which is what the pics labelled as S. aterrimus in the Cat-eLog are), which grows to about 20cm. I've been meaning to weigh in on this one for a while but I have some ...

Well, all I can say is that the various species of Corydoras I've collected in the wild none were living on pea gravel. Or, for that matter, were there very many plants around (in the water) there were plenty shading it. Having said that I have found them living over rock chip gravel so sharp I coul...

I would avoid C. adolfoi unless you are buying tank raised ones acclimatized to neutral pH. Wild ones will not enjoy the experience. C. trilineatus (what you are calling C. julii) are a good bet, and maybe 10 would be really good in your tank. Maybe a few less if you go for C. sterbai as they are a ...

I don't think it would be too hard to put a link to the chatroom in the forum link cluster and put (at the bottom of the posts) whos in the chatroom. To be honest though, I'm not all that fussed about chatroom use.

Try a search on or look up Corydoras paleatus, this is a very common on fish and it is more likely to be what you have, especially if "cambs" = Cambridgeshire.

Synodontis serpentis did cross my mind as I looked tat the photo in Sand's book. The extremely rugose head kinda threw me off, though. Is this something that could develop with age? Also, the pics I ID'ed as S. serpentis on PC are of a just slightly more elongate fish but its one of those th...

Yes, some plecos eat from the outside in and others from the inside out. The skin is often eaten and I find it helps keep the food together as the fish work on it.
