Re: Filtration for 55l
when you haul them out to clean you inevitably get water all over the front of the tank and the floor. you can minimize this by using a small pan and putting right up to the tank and transferring the filter to it but you still make a mes IMHE

if i buy them in a store i look at all the others, the good ones will show approximately the same temp, some will be higher and some will be lower. buy one that is in the majority . i believe that the worst are the outside strip, i have some and all i use them for is an approximation. i believe that...

the theoretical standard of service here is 1 -10 minute outage every 10 years, what a joke
at least in Cambridge we would get a flyer detailing scheduled outages, that's not happening here

Re: Marc's fish room build
i moved from a place that had a lot of outages (Cambridge MA)., of all places to a place that has somewhat less issues and the very first thing that went into the downsized house went was a 14,000 watt standby generator. how much are my fish worth? how much are yours worth? my days of staying up all...

it's always interesting to me that fish that can stand a 10 degree f temperature swing when they are out in a pond with no harm can develop ick in a tank with as little as a 2-3 degree f drop

Re: Using sand as substrate
i too have Cory tanks and i use black sand, since i am using it for a foraging place i only use 3/4 of an inch. i would guess that with a layer that small there is relatively little bio filtration done, also doesn't trap larger particles, in fact they do sit on top of the sand so it makes sense filt...

i too do large water changes, but the water is always the same chemically, the reservoir is over 40 billion gallons so any change is small and over a lot of time When i needed a new water heater i went for one of the new condensing, it will supply hot water for changes for forever and once i have to...

Re: Temperature During Summer
the down side is that they are not very practical for large tanks or ones that require large "pull downs". most peltier coolers are used in camping coolers for example and even then are of limited capacity. they are sold for use in aquariums but small tanks with not much of a heat load. if...

i have gotten them to school but it really only was when someone gave me about 100 of them and they were in a large tank, they only time they truly schooled was at feeding time and when they sensed a threat in a really big (long) 18 lb siamese cat who would get up on this hind legs and go nose to no...

you said it, the large surge of high quality nutrients, condition that are orders of magnitude better ( no one tapping on the glass 200 times a day, so less stressed) just their natural response to excellent conditions

so yeah, unless the tank is the size of your living room, multiple grans is a bad thing. they do fine with S multi as tank mates but the multis i have are a really boisterous bunch, always all over the place and this would appear to keep the granulosus in his place. i see him sometimes, lights out o...

i keep mine in a 150 with some others, mostly S multipunctatus
Just out of curiosity how much did they set up back?
Around here (US) about $200.00 each, so about 160 pounds sterling
I'v never seen anyone selling that many at one time, mostly they are a one off on a site called aquabid
