Re: L244 Sexing

Today I managed to see two Pseudolithoxus dumus fry at once, and get a photo of them. Unfortunately I couldn't get them both in focus at the same time, but this pair of photos clearly show there are at least two. I put this fallen log in the tank a few days ago, it was covered in algae and lichen an...

Re: L244 Sexing

I had one more sighting of a baby on Monday, and nothing since then. The tank has countless hiding places so hopefully the one I saw is OK and there are some others in there somewhere. As well as repashy I have added some more branches with algae growth to provide additional grazing surfaces, plus s...

Re: Maximum Corydoras in a 170 - 180 litre tank

Thanks! I think I’d be looking at a herd of about 20 Corydoras in a 180L tank with a moderate number of other fish I normally do water changes of about 50% per week or 30% twice-weekly. I would recommend getting all the same species, or two similarly-marked species that are found together in the wil...

Re: Maximum Corydoras in a 170 - 180 litre tank

The half dozen ancistrus you have already will give a singificant bioload for that size tank, plus a lot of bottom-dwelling territory. And that’s before they start breeding. While I love big herds of cories, I think you don’t have much space for then with the existing inhabitants. What percentage wa...

Re: L244 Sexing

I have seen one baby fish several times now, always in the same area of the tank (so I think it's the same fish). It's very active, grazing over the hard surfaces and occasionally a brief dash across from one to another. I have put a chunk of Repashy near it in the hope that it realises that it's fo...

There are only adults of the same species, no other fish.
Also snails and blackworms.

Re: L244 Sexing

I have been away for a few days, and have just come home to spot this while doing a water change on the L244 tank! Happy times :-) L244_baby2.jpg L244_baby.jpg Sorry about the poor quality photos, I was in the middle of siphoning the tank and it scarpered pretty quick. Hopefully there are some more ...

Re: L244 Sexing

Many thanks, Eric. Sorry for not replying sooner, I've been away from home quite a bit and there has been nothing much interesting to report. Several times I have seen two fish near that same cave where there was activity before, but that was about it. Just before writing this I went to glance at th...

Re: Tank mates for L095

I’ve had a lot of pleasure (and a few spawns) from my group of Biotodoma cupido. Half-way in size between rams and geos, they do well in a shoal of 5-10 fish and are more peaceful than most cichlids. Other than that, a zillion rummy-nose tetras. They’re the best shoalers and look stunning in a group...

Wanted (UK): Corydoras condiscipulus and/or amapaensis

I'm currently sitting at my desk watching my Corydoras oiapoquensis in a spawning frenzy, and I've got one fry already hatched in the nursery from a little bit of early activity last week. They share the tank with two Corydoras condiscipulus and a single Corydoras amapaensis which are doing the equi...

Re: Feeding twigs??

I do use oak, but I generally dry it thoroughly (6 months or more) rather than use it fresh. I also find that they prefer the wood in the middle rather than the bark. At first I thought this thread would be about feeding Farlowella twig cats! Would be interesting to see if others have used fresh tim...

Re: L244 Sexing

There has certainly been a lot of activity in the front corner of the tank recently, involving the big male Pseudolithoxus dumus and possibly two other fish. The male is spending a lot of time in a particular cave, and this afternoon he kept adjusting his position in the cave, like tossing and turni...

Re: L244 Sexing

Something interesting is happening. After having all my Pseudolithoxus dumus out of the tank last week for photos and a clean-up and rescape, the five fish have settled back in, with the big male preferring the front corner of the tank where he was before, even though the decor has changed somewhat....

Re: How will Gold Nugget fare in my hard water?

This image is the newest I can find, nearly a year old I'm afraid. I'll try and get another one soon. This picture does show how much grazing area there is in the tank, all over that bogwood. Tankmates are a shoal of a dozen Phenacogrammus aurantiacus 'lefini' and four of the aforementioned giant ot...

Re: How will Gold Nugget fare in my hard water?

I've had 'Klondike', my Baryancistrus xanthellus for about 2.5 years now, he started off smaller than my group of 'giant otos' Hypoptopoma cf_guianense in the same tank. I've had a quick look and can't immediately find any recent pictures, but I saw him today so he's still doing fine. He goes throug...

Re: How will Gold Nugget fare in my hard water?

I bought my nugget from Pier Aquatics about 2 years ago. We have very soft water here (TDS 30, pH 6.8) and Neil advised me that in his experience nuggets like it a little harder. I added some coral gravel to the filter to stop the pH dropping too far. Some of my other tanks I deliberately run very a...

Re: L244 Sexing

Hi Eric, Many thanks for your thoughts; I agree. In the tank rescape I have tried to provide a variety of caves and crevices of different sizes and shapes so hopefully there will be something to suit each fish. They feed almost entirely on Repashy, a cocktail of Morning Wood, Soilent Green, Bottom S...

Re: L244 Sexing

Back in August I was able to add two more Pseudolithoxus dumus fish to this tank, so there are a total of 5, from 4 different suppliers at different times. Recently the biggest fish (one of the new ones) had been spending a lot of time at the front of the tank, often visible and quite bold, but I ha...

Re: Marc's fish room build

I agree, Viktor. My father (an engineer) used to say that even if you tried to make a realistic estimate, then in reality the project would take e times as long and cost pi times as much as you thought. That’s the true definition of e and pi! (e = 2.7, pi = 3.1, both approx) My experience is the sam...

Re: L244 Sexing

Thanks Eric. I bought a fifth fish yesterday as well. The two new ones are one of each sex as far as I can tell, and they're adults about 90mm to 100mm SL. At the moment I'm leaving them undisturbed to settle in to the tank. At some stage I ought to get them all out for some new photos, but not just...

Re: L244 Sexing

Today I found a shop with about 10 Pseudolithoxus dumus so I have added another fish to my group (now a total of 4). The group seem to continue to co-exist peacefully and spend most of their time hiding in the tangle of caves and wood in their tank. I try not to disturb them too much, just doing wat...

Re: Suggestions for 110-gallon display tank

Mol_PMB, am I correct that the Biotodoma , Farlowella , and tetras are all in the same tank? Yes, all together. There are also 4 plecs: 2 L397, 1 L233, 1 juvenile L427. The tank has lots of branches, caves and bogwood to break up sightlines and create hiding places. The Farlowella tend to spawn on ...
