Re: Safety of collected wood
I've been told before that I must pressure wash the loose parts off of driftwood. Do you find this excessive? Would just a reasonably thorough manual cleaning be enough to avoid a messy tank with floating debris, pieces of bark, rotten parts fallen apart, etc.? Also, Birger, are you not worried abou...

yeah, seashells can be sharp; they also can slowly dissolve and form very thin and sharp edges. i cannot quite make out if the substrate is all seashells or if there are some (coarse?) nuggets/gravel too. the water must be pretty alkaline, right? on the upside, the substrate probably houses a ton of...

I like the tank. It's unique. Sure functional but has something else about it too. I've never seen a tank with so many hiding places before - it's an equivalent of a high-rise apartment building
I am not seeing many cichlids. Is it scarcely populated? It looks big.

Sure fire, Alex- "should" does not equal "will". I think all Mats and I were trying to say, to use your analogy, that when a human being is born, statistics says it can be expected to live to 60-90 years these days. That is because LeeRoy was also speaking in general. Sure, Groke...

Re: Channel Catfish - Ictalurus punctatus profile
Cat-eLog indicates channels would hardly grow beyond 27.6". Yet, at some other ernest forums, e.g., aqualand http://aqualandpetsplus.com/Catfish,%20Channel.htm - see e.g., 7th pic down (could be a blue channel, which grow up to 65"??), people speak of 3-4 foot pet channel cats.

What would be excellent would be a picture of one against a tape measure or similar? Hear, hear! Mine (http://www.planetcatfish.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=13&t=29628) are now about 25-28" TL. I'd love to have a pic in Cat-eLog with a 3-footer with a ruler next to it. 1.2 m!! Wow, that's 4 f...

Interesting find, Taksan! Wish I'd never seen it  but now that I did - It does appear like they are serious... about shaking up and spicing up the tank-cleaning world. Re: The final straw.
LeeRoy, if your lifespan guesstimates are for catfish, then Mats, is very right. Not that I experienced it firsthand, but from all that I've read and has been discussed on this site, cats can live for a very long time, 5-50 years, and most would in ideal husbandry conditions. Many bear witness to th...

Hey, Grokefish! Don't know what you need: encouragement or consolation? I'll try the former. It's a bear of a task, guys and gals, and I am very glad someone is doing something about it. Re: Can you confirm synodontis please ?
I am maybe perpetuating old news/concept or at least incomplete news but AFAIK nothing natural follows hormone injection: the milt and roe are literally squeezed out of the parent fishes, which usually kills them... Hybridization does occur in nature but it is quite rare, I am told, very, very rare.

I'm no syno expert, like Richard B and others, but some of mine look a lot like yours and they have been thought to be a hybrid (definitely), perhaps of S. decorus and S. multipunctata. Often they are called Jaguar synos in the trade, not that the name means much at all - any spotty fish can be call...

Yes but it is a wonderful step in the right direction. It shows that even bigbox stores care and can be made change their ways. The next step would be to post a short description of how hybrids are produced next to the label but no one would buy the fish then... so the next step is to educate the pu...

Wow. Very different looks for the same fish... Are these color "variants"? If yes, the variations are pretty wild. Maybe, it is not fully classified yet into different species?
