Re: L-173b from Glaser

Yann- Thanks for the input. What I have come to believe about this whole issue is that there is nobody who really has any clue as to whether any of these various Hypancistrus species are actually distinct species, hybrids, cross breeds or variations. I have read on a number of sites and books with i...

Re: L-173b from Glaser

When I posted this thread I was sure I would get at least a few responses telling me why my fish were not 173s and maybe one or two saying they could be. Considering how much discussion this topics has garnered in other posts, I am surprised there is no discussion here. Should I take the fact that n...

I am also most interested in the results. I have gotten to this site but was stopped due to language issues. The English version was almost useless.

L-173b from Glaser

As I promised a while back, I have taken a number of photos of the 7 fish I got via Glaser in Dec of 2009. I recently had to move them into new, more spacious, digs and used the opportunity to have my brother take pictures for me. There are 26 photos in all for the 7 fish and I felt trying to post t...

Re: Belo Monte Dam update from Altimira

The only way to help these species still remains the "illegal" removal of them from the rivers before they can be made extinct by the Brazilian government and the related business interests. I used to think otherwise. But when you try to stand in the way of progress you just get bulldozed.

Re: zebra plecos

Amy I can understand your desire to have a zebra. I love em and have had some for years. That said, as vanillarum pointed out, zebras are real hiders, the old saying is that a happy zebra is a hiding zebra. One of the things that makes it such a neat fish is the striking nature of true black and whi...

I do things quite the opposite of most in this thread I think. I have well water which comes from the tap at about GH 6, kh 5 and pH 7.4. I was recently told my TDS were around 90 ppm, (I have never owned a TDS meter0. I have no issues with algae or fim. I currently run 3 zebra tanks- 30 gal breeder...

I have always used my mouse as a sort of place holder when surfing. I move my mouse a lot when going through things on any given page. That mouse over stuff drives me nuts. Fortunately most browsers offer a way to disable this function. I mostly use Firefox and I think I managed to prevent the annoy...

Re: L66 breed almost all have damaged pectoral fins

I would never want to disagree with Shane nor any of the very experienced catfish folks on this site, but I feel I should in this case. I have been spawning a number of plecos over the past few years to include common tank bristlenose, zebras, contradens and L-134. The latter 3 have only been bred i...

Re: my FIRST spawn....what can I feed the fry???

Most fish see eggs as food and act accordingly. Both your betta and the corys themselves would eat the eggs. Ideally the eggs should be removed and hatched either in a small tank or other container. You may need to provide any or all of: heat, air and methyl blue (or other fungus preventer} dependin...

Re: Drought has Amazon tributary at record low levels

This comes from the NASA site: The Earth is in an ice age now. It started about 2 million years ago and is known as the Quaternary Period. Despite the many warm periods since then, we identify the entire time as one ice age because of the continuous existence of at least one large ice sheet—the one ...

Re: L046 breeding tank

Within reasonable limits, area is normally more important than volume for bottom feeders- aka territory. However, unless your tank is hugely tall and thus small in area, you should be fine with 3 zebras growing out in that tank for years and even living there longer term given sufficient cover when ...

This topic has always fascinated me. Haven bred a few 100 zebras from a small colony over the years I can report a very few snubbers- fewer than 5. So I find it hard to believe the cause is genetic. If it is, it is certainly a rarely seen defect. I had also heard this is primarily if not exclusively...

Barb- I may be the only person you know who spawns plecos and is also absolutely incapable of sexing them. A long time ago I gave up trying and learned to rely on behavioral cues more than physical features. My solution to this deficiency as a fish keeper is to buy fish in groups and let them sort i...

Re: Bought as L173, maybe L66 or L333 white band?

I bought 7 fish at the end of last year via Glaser sold as L-173b. At the time somebody whom I trust on hypan. ID bought the same fish. They ranged in size from about 1.5-1.75in. for 5 of them and the last two were about 2.25in. TL. There are pics from about that time (from Glaser I presume) on a fo...

It's on the Brazilian endangered list of species and can not be more forbidden than that.
That is a JOKE- the only thing endangering the zebra pleco is the Brazilian government.

What do Sturisomatichthys leightoni eggs look like?

Last December i purchased 5 TR Sturisomatichthys leightoni from Mark D. I lost one but the other 4 have been doing fine in their own 20 gal. tank. I just went out to my fish space to feed the tanks and I have two of them on the bottom glass right up front on what looks like a bunch of greenish eggs?...
