you could keep checking petsmart, I try them every week and are usually disappointed but two weeks ago they had some gorgeous Brochis, I bought all 6 and they are doing great in quarantine, eating like hogs

Re: pleco tank filtration?
the 2217s are the best. I have one that must be close to 25 years old and the only thing I have replaced is the impeller shaft ('cause it was a little noisy, not because it had broken) I have 14 - 2217s and 2215s and never have a problem. they are not the easiest filter to service but they make up f...

true about the magnum and the eheim except that the eheim has a lot more room for filter pads, bio material, carbon etc. if the mag 350s are the same as the ones we have in the states you get a small container for material and a single spongy covering. you're not going to get anywhere near as much f...

there were quite a number of Petsmarts selling hybrids as Longirostris, I am the proud owner of 2. I should have known better. the chances that they would have a line on someone as infrequently seen as Longirostris were minimal but there is one born every minute as they say, even one who should have...

Re: Please help me feel better about exercising judgement in a fish store
you've got more willpower than me. I've been known to buy the fish and then cruise Craigslist on the phone on the way home to find something to put them in long term. I've got 11 tanks so I have a little more flexibility but if I see something I've wanted for a long time and am not likely to see aga...

Re: Synodontis resting on filter intake
I've noticed that s. eupterus in particular seem to like strange resting places, I have one who also sits "on" the filter intake. hasn't done him any damage. I am assuming this is an adult fish? if so unless the filter has a really powerful suction he is more than strong enough to free him...

Re: Natural sand?
I use the stuff from carib sea and find it an excellent product. I use the black sand in all my tanks and find that is a stunning look. I only use about 1/2 inch so the catfish keep it stirred up enough to avoid "dead" spots

Re: Filter transplantation
any of the big on line retailers should have the replacement o ring, sounds like you have some time to order it and break the filter in. instead of an air stone you could use a sponge filter. they come in various sizes and work really well and again you have the time to make sure that the sponge fil...

I use the Carib Sea Tahitian Moon black sand also not only do I sea less barbell erosion than I did with gravel but it also looks fantastic. If you do like I do and only use about 1/2 inch you don't have to vacuum the gravel when doing water changes as the corys keep it stirred up well enough when t...

Re: 100 Gallon Community
you do know that there are better ways to cycle a tank with live fish right? some people consider it inhumane. straight ammonia can be used, a filter that is established can be moved to the tank, that kind of thing. a few dwarf rainbowfish are probably not going to suffer much in a tank that large b...

jaegers seem to be the best over the long haul, 3-5 watts per gallon has been the accepted rule for a long time. you are better off with 2 100 watt heaters (for example) then one 200 watt . this is so if one heater fails the tank will not get too cool, likewise if the heater sticks on it gives you m...

I also run an Alita, could not be more pleased, I would stay away from the linear piston pumps as they are fairly noisy and vibrate a lot.

Re: Do I need a heater guard?
you will have to be careful with a heater guard, the manufacturers of heaters assume that water can flow freely around the unit, the guard is going to restrict this to some degree. when I did water changes I would always direct a little of the stream to flush out the heater guard and rinse out mulm,...

Re: Gap between tank and stand
if you are that concerned about this stand, and should be with putting 1200 to 1400 lbs on it, why not just build a stand out of cinder blocks (again, it's then 4 corners that need to be supported primarily) and then make an enclosure to fit? I used to use cinder blocks and 2x8s for the stand and th...

Re: Gap between tank and stand
tanks are primarily supported by the 4 corners. most metal stands have virtually no support in the middle. if it's a 120 it's probably 60x18? I have a couple and they are braced in the middle as these are tall heavy tanks. the easiest thing to do is to put some Styrofoam (not sure what that is calle...

Re: synos and nitrofurazone
Columnaris is a gram negative aerobic bacterial infection, kind of looks like fungus. it's often found in the fish's gills. It's pretty difficult to treat once is has a hold. It's more the rest of the fish in the tank I'm concerning myself with. I'm not sure what disease you have in mind
