Re: Feeding twigs??
I have occasionally used fresher pieces of wood in my tank with Farlowella and a bristlenose. For some types of wood they strip the bark pretty avidly. However, I wasn't attempting to feed them, but landscape the tank, and they ate off the wood in the process of waterlogging it. I will note that oak...

In the wild many species of cory shoal together. This Nature article describes a set of mimicry rings in cories which all involve similarly-patterned species shoaling together.

Re: Pointpleco's catfish pics
Very nice photo of the glass cats. They are hard to take a photo of at all, I find, given how much they like to hide and how little of them reflects light.
I've found that pygmy cories do best with a reasonably-sized school, incidentally.

Re: Tank feedback section/drop down box to help give ideas ??
I just meant for the pictures of our tanks and tank running info. That in most ways could help people with what can be done better (setups for certain species so they will breed) and also how people think the tanks look, mostly good i think. I think i would like it and enjoy if people help, as i'm ...

Re: Tiger Shovel Nose Catfish problems
But once you do and they breed for you, wild or from an LFS, you would have a constant supply. For instance many people breed convicts and other easy cichlids for this purpose. Convicts breed so readily that some people just end up with too many and want to unload them. Recently the local aquarium ...

I seriously doubt anyone has attempted to wean Vandellia off of live hosts. Finding even basic information on these fish is quite hard, and so unless there's a lot more research happening and either not being published or being published outside of the (English language) journals I have access to I'...

Re: Tiger Shovel Nose Catfish problems
I would presoak the feed in the laxative and vitamin B1 solution (or much rather Vitachem solution as it has a balance of all vitamins and minerals needed) for a good length of time, say half a day or, if in a fridge, 1-2 days, so it is soaked all throughout and then feed. I'd feed the TSN as much ...

Re: keeping activated carbon safe ??
I don't think your bacteria will survive in the activated carbon - unless you put it into another filter. Are there any significant numbers of bacteria in activated carbon anyway? I've always thought activated carbon was a chemically active filtration method that binds to all sorts of compounds (in...

Re: Help: The unthinkable happend.
A further issue may be tap water quality, in the EU it is fairly tightly regulated, where as in the USA it can be a lot more variable. No kidding! The tap water that comes out of the sink in my lab is so high in nitrites that I can't use it for fish. (The sink twenty feet away through a wall is fin...

Re: Help: The unthinkable happend.
If I may be so bold as to try finding an explanation, I was informed people in America sometimes like to have a high tech tank, with a lot of fishes, which gets a 50 % waterchange every day. I'm sure some people have these, but basing an explanation of the difference in European and American fishke...

Re: The early catfish catches the worm: predation of Corydoras aeneus (Siluriformes, Callichthyidae) on freshwater nemat
This paper ( Do Meio- and Macrobenthic Nematodes Differ in Community Composition and Body Weight Trends with Depth? ) estimates dry weight of nematodes as 25% of wet weight (and links to some not-so-open source papers to justify that). The original paper states that prey weight as a percent of preda...

Re: Troglomorphic features and possible introgressive hybridization of Astroblepus pholeter
Hybridization is probably less likely in species that become sympatric (overlap) during flood seasons than species that never do. Hybrids are often less-well adapted than non-hybrids and so there are often reasons for species that do see each other regularly to avoid mating with each other. A simple...

Re: Troglomorphic features and possible introgressive hybridization of Astroblepus pholeter
So hybridization happens in the nature too ! Yes but not in the random way we cause it in aquaria. Biological introgression is typically observed between two related species in an area where the two species overlap over time, so genes can flow from one to the second and back to the first. More spec...

Re: Bristlenose does'nt eat cucumbers?
Three thoughts: 1) They may not like cucumber. Mine will strip the skin from cucumber and leave the flesh behind. 2) They may need time to realize it's food, as mentioned. 3) They may want it to soften a lot. I wasn't having any luck with spinach for my BN and then I left a leaf in too long, it turn...

Re: Need help with aquarium weight and stand
1 liter of water = 1 kilogram (2.2 lbs). So a full 240 gallon tank weighs 240 kg (528 lbs) if it were completely full (which it won't be) and held only water (which isn't true). So add some weight to account for the substrate, etc. I normally also assume the listed weight limits on shelving is only ...

Thanks for replies, yes Dave Rinaldo that the one i thought it was. I must have just held it in the right way. Even dead the spines can poison. Collecting Bristlenose Morph Breeding Reports
Hello all. On the thread Bristlenose Morphs and Breeding we discussed whether there was any comprehensive dataset on the genetics of bristlenose breeding (as there is for, for instance, corn snakes). The answer seems to be no, there isn't one. But this is PlanetCatfish, and so we can probably put to...

There is a post somewhere from a long time ago, that was where I remembered the "three different types of albinism" from, but I can't re-find it. Milton Tan (@Suckermouth) was going to write an article on Bristlenose genetics, but I don't think he ever did. I suspect I can track down info...

Do we have a good genetic explanation for bristlenose morphs or is this uninvestigated? I ask because I suspect that this forum would be the place to gather useful data that would get us closer towards a good genetic hypothesis.

Hi ! If albino and super red are carried from recessive genes its not possble their offspring to be original grey - black color ! Sure it is. They just have to be different genes. I had a similar problem with some home-made food, which smelled like (and I quote my wife here) "Satan farted and then it congealed". I now heat water in a pot on the grill outside (the home-made stuff needs near-boiling water). In cold weather the congealing part happens outside on the sc...

Re: Lima shovelnose damaged pectoral fin on fish net
I don't have a lot of advice, but I can't see how the net will fall off on its own safely. It won't degrade fast enough, which means it will only come off by catching on things and being pulled, which may worsen the damage. There are ways to sedate fish (I've only seen them used at extreme levels fo...

I've got an idea for a 20 gallon long that involves removable barriers across the length of the tank. I want to install mostly-permanent "grooves" (I'll be installing the double short dividers that make the groove, of course) on the sides of the tank that I can slide the barriers into or o...
