7th July 2012 - Android "QuickFind" App released

Post by Jools »

For those with Android phones, we now have an application to do the "Quick find" that is available at the top of the pages of the website. The advantage of the app is that there's no need to wait for a planet page to open, then type into the page and wait for the page to update. Instead, just launch the app, enter a few words of the name of the fish into the app and it will display a list of species names and pictures.

It searches latin and common names as well as synonyms. It can also handle lazy searches ("hypan zeb" for example). You can then select one of the resulting names to quickly load the cat-elog data sheet.

A big +1 to Mats for building this app and supplying it for free download.

You can get it via Google Play (Android Marketplace) here.

Happy in-LFS catfish looking up!

Out of curiosity, how big would an offline version of the CLOG be roughly, with all photos, or lets say with just one photo per species?

Well, that's a leading question! Quick answer is 5GB. With one image, then about 1GB of that. With an optimised for mobile single image per species, about 700MB. Could likely get it down to 500MB with some thought.

Pray why do you ask? :-)

500-700 MB is actually quite reasonable.

I ask, as my device is only wifi, so the app obviously wouldn't work in an LFS or out in the field.

It's a moot point through, as I'd be unlikely to be waltzing around the LFS with a tablet (would look like a right idiot), or taking one out into the field (most likely ruin it).

Still, a mobile CLOG would be pretty cool.

One day LFS will have wifi and serve coffee. Possibly even have a sofa or two Or maybe that is just a daft hope of mine. Anyway, I plan to design for online mobile clog access over the next year or two.

Cheers
