L244 colour variants?

Post by Mol_PMB »

I have two fish which were both sold as L244 and appear to match the published descriptions.

They came from different shops at different times. Neither are fully grown, they are about 3" and 4" overall length. I'm not certain of sex but they are tolerating each other at the moment.

My question relates to the fact that they are clearly different colours. Although there is some colour-changing with mood, the smaller one is yellow with black spots while the larger one is brown with black spots. This is especially noticeable when looking at the belly, and when the two fish occasionally pose together.

Are there different colour variants of the L244? Do they change with age? Is one of my fish misidentified?

I've attached a few pics, I have plenty more as these guys are quite photogenic. Only one belly pic of the bigger one though.

Many thanks :)

So, have I asked a question that is too difficult, or a question that is so dumb it doesn't deserve a response?

Anyone got ideas on colour variation in L244?

Yours Hopefully,
Paul

I suspect there are very few who have seen this variation - it's a new one on me. Also, referring to it as might get more readers...

Thanks Jools for the quick response :)

I know these fish aren't that common in the hobby but I have fallen for them!

Must confess I haven't worked out how to do the species link thing but I'll work it out :)

Regards,
Paul

It's pretty straightforward (though easier on the PC than Tapatalk). If on the PC, when you write or reply to a post, between the subject field and the post, you'll see a row of options, one of them being clog:
post_header.JPG

Hit the clog button when you want to link to a fish, and between the two pairs of brackets, type the latin name, the L number or common name, so when posting it will look something like this (though I have added a couple of spaces inside the clog tags to force them to not show as test):

Code: Select all

[clog ]Pseudolithoxus dumus[ /clog]
If you then preview your post, and hover over the purple text, you should see a pop-up:

If not, check the spelling.
Hope this helps

L244 colour variants?

Post by Mol_PMB »

Thanks Martin :) I'll do that from now on!
Presumably on tapatalk I can just type or copy the HTML test version?

Incidentally, when viewing on Tapatalk the link isn't resolved and the text immediately after the clog link doesn't appear. In this case 'might get more readers' is not there.

Yes, that's what i do, just type in the tags and the text in-between.
This is an issue that has been raised by me already, and even after I upgraded to TT2, I'm still seeing it. I know Jools has spent time looking at this, and has raised it with TT, hopefully it will get sorted at some point. It only seems to be an issue where a clog tag is used in a post, but think it has also been an issue with images in posts as well!
Cheers

My two L244s again. I think they are both boys and I do see the occasional chase going on, but they also seem comfortable in each others company at times. They posed like this for about 5 minutes while I fetched the camera, closed the curtains, turned off the room lights, waited for the photo-bombing Rummies to (mostly) get out of the way, and finally took their portrait :)

In the blackwater tank everything looks a bit yellow, but the belly pics against the glass in my earlier posts show the true colour difference.

I'd love to get a female for these guys but the 6 I have seen for sale have all been males :(

I've been going on body shape, the hairyness of the pectoral fins, and the size of the pelvic fins, as in the species profile and the linked breeding report. But I might be wrong!

I do hope that the fact that mine tolerate each other in a small tank might be a hopeful sign...
