Pleco ID please

Post by YSR50 »

Hate to be that guy, but I would appreciate the help if anyone can give me a somewhat accurate ID this little guy. I'll try to get better pictures now that he's settled in and shows a darker brown coloring.

One request though, please don't bother telling me it's a Columbian/Fake/Brown Zebra or any other "common" name. Not to sound ungrateful, but I already know I could go to multiple LFSs and see any number of scribble type Hypans labeled as some made up common name.

TIA

The last pictures remind me of debilittera. But take that with a grain of salt. These plecos are a challenge for me.

Pictures in my original post are from April when I first brought it (and a ?) home. The first picture below is from later in the day when it colored up a bit. The second picture below is from June

That was my guess as well, didn't want to put it out there and influence anyones opinion. The size matches up also, although I have no way of telling if it is fulling grown. The only thing I am sure of is that it is a Hypan and, unfortunately, sexually mature.

Didn't realize how much different this fish looks now compared to the original pictures.

This is my L201 tank, or contradens, depending on who you ask ;) The tank is out of the way and I don't pay much attention to it other than maintenance, feeding, and occasionally grabbing fry when I feel like bothering. It also has become sort of a QT for new arrivals. Not trying to put them in harms way, but they breed so much that I have plenty spread out throughout my tanks.

The reason I was sure he was a Hypan was that I caught him trapping an L201 last week and thought I could see eggs a few days later. Then yesterday I thought I seen movement in the back of the cave. The cave is a tight fit, and in order to see inside I need to lay on the floor with a flashlight. The L201s often breed and have wrigglers with snails in the cave the entire time, so I thought maybe what I thought was eggs was actually old snail shells. Even just now, trying to dump the cave, a few old yellowish snail shells fell out first. Thought maybe I got lucky and there were no eggs, but no, some wrigglers finally made it out. Now I need to set up "Misfit Island" tank for dad and his young until I can figure out what to with these hybrids.
