Is this really similis not violetta?

Post by Proteus »

Went to a swap meet today and was besotted with the tiny corydoras babies. They were labeled violetta but it looked like the Corydoras(ln9)similis per other threads i dug into that its common to call those the violettas.

No bigger than my fingernails! Definitely think theyre the bees knees i got 15 of those guys. Excited to grow them out and work with this group!

There was no pictures of the juvies/fry though on the cat elog. 2cm in length

Hi Proteus,

I have good news and bad news.

First the bad news. There is no such thing as Corydoras violetta.

Now the good news. As you learned in other threads, "violet cory" and "violetta cory" are trade names for . So yes in fact you did buy violetta corys and yes you do have C. similis.

Beautiful little cory. I hope you enjoy them for a long time.

Cheers, Eric

Odd that Corydors similis is one of the more easy to identify species. After all, one would assume they are similar to another species with their name.

And as I think C similis is one of the more beautifull corys, it is also a pity there is not a similar species available.

"Latin similis = like alluding to the similarity of the colouration of this species to Corydoras ourastigma."

Also, was "violetta" not the common name for C. ourastigma and not C. similis - I can't recall, was a while ago but probably worth me recording as a common name.

Cheers

I've never seen C. ourastigma for sale in the USA, but C. similis is often sold around here as the violet or violetta cory.

Probably just my memory at fault! Will add a common name entry.

Cheers,
