Spotted Corydoras ID?
Confirm which of the spotted cories this one is? Sex if possible? Individual measures nearly 3 inches, like paleatus size but bulkier.

High bodied, snouty and no black markings in the top half of the dorsal? I'd go for .

Re: Spotted Corydoras ID?
Awesome! I was originally told agassizii when smaller as had more black in the dorsal but has grown and markings are off. Thaaat may make it easier to find more of this one.

C. agassizii is really similar and where one species finishes and the other starts is difficult - both are commonly available and mixed in exports. It's just the black marking looked pretty low down in the fin to me.

Short video clip of this fish. I love how mellow this one is. My albino bronze are nutty and this one is my calmest.

Re: Spotted Corydoras ID?
Same individual as above... but the markings change!!
Agassizii or Ambiacus...
The dorsal pattern fades and darkens with time, so variable :/ hes got the blue sheen that seems to be noted on the ambiacus page, tail seems longer and more elongated at the tips compared to the Agassizii...
I'm on the hunt for more of these guys, had the opportunity for Agassizii... but if he's Ambiacus that defeats the purpose.

Re: Spotted Corydoras ID?
With the dorsal darkening up, I'm inclined towards .
Again, as Jools noted, sometimes it's difficult to tell a pale agassizii from a dark ambiacus. Therefore, even if we conclude that yours is agassizii, what's to say that the new fish you buy as agassizii aren't ambiacus? Ugh, the plight of all devoted cory keepers!
And there is some conversation, although I don't know if anyone's actively working to pursue it, about the notion that ambiacus and agassizii are a single species.
Cheers, Eric

Re: Spotted Corydoras ID?
So in the end it wouldn't 100% matter just get a bit more of them and hope at least its a mix of BOTH.
This guy is tricky haha...
But then at least I could widen my search for both species and may have an easier time with one over the other.
I may keep my cories in mixed groups, but I like to have some of their own around as well. They do group together but they also like to hang around with their own as well, so I feel bad hes by himself though he joins my trilineatus and paleatus a lot. Ive got the leucomelas too, which he likes but the leucomelas chose the cw028s over this guy lol

Re: Spotted Corydoras ID?
Yes there is some debate, but don't mix the two intentionally.
That said, and not wanting to disappoint, but both ambiacus and agassizii are difficult to breed, so if you do buy more to make a school for swimming together, of course try to get fish that look similar, but in the end if you get the two species mixed together, unless you're REALLY lucky (or really unlucky, depending on your perspective), you won't likely have a spawn from them or hybrid fry.
Cheers, Eric

Re: Spotted Corydoras ID?
Not looking to intentionally breed them, just for some companions.
But even so I like to be sure everyone has some of their own around.
But hey if theyre lucky and same species and they breed, then even more of them and easier to provide them to other people in my area lol
But breeding this one isn't a priority or my concern, I just want him to be happy
He is in a tank that has 33 corydoras, so he's not short for cory company until I find some more though. But proving difficult to locate them at all since he was a mixup in the trilineatus at the store.
