Three different plecos I photographed last week

Post by Cory-headache »

Hi guys,
sorry for the many questions the last two days. I got to see a lot of new plecos, but they can be so tricky to identify. Here are three species I can't get an ID on. The little one on the green leaf was signed as Ancistrus pirareta, but I'm not sure this is correct. The snowball pleco makes my head spin, so many options (L201, L007, L029, LDA031, L026, etc.) The first one is probably just gibbiceps, but he looks odd so confirmation would be nice.
Many thanks in advance!

Hi,

1. Pterygoplichthys gibbiceps indeed
2. A Hypancistrus, check L 28 to compare with yours
3. Could be A. pirareta, they did come in last year after a long period of no exports. But it could also be the common Ancistrus sp., I can not rule out any based on this photo.

Thanks! So Hypancistrus sp. L004, L005, L028, L073 (all those numbers seem to be the same undescribed species)
I find this species different looking from the options I suggested honestly (L201, L007, L029, LDA031, L026, etc.). Any particular reason why you say L004? This one seems to have more, and especially smaller, spots than the one in my picture.

Thanks in advance for clarification!

Likely, yes.

Agree, but you also suggested four different genera and this is clearly a Hypancistrus.

I suggested L 28, but not for a specific reason, it's simply the most traded of the mentioned ones. The pattern varies and also depends on the age of the individual, old specimens will have smaller spots. H. lunaorum (L 339) is also similar to your fish btw.
