New Chaetostoma

Post by Silurus »

Urbano-Bonilla, A and GA Ballen, 2020. A new species of Chaetostoma (Siluriformes: Loricariidae) from the Orinoco basin with comments on Amazonian species of the genus in Colombia. Journal of Fish Biology doi:10.1111/jfb.14640.
Abstract

Chaetostoma chimu sp. nov. is described from 119 specimens collected in the Andean foothills of the Orinoco River in Colombia. The new species can be distinguished from congeners by a combination of characters, including shape of cheek odontodes, presence of a supraoccipital excrescence, sexual dimorphism characters, and color pattern. In addition, from the sympatric and geographically close congeners of the Orinoco that have curved cheek odontodes (i.e., C. anale, C. formosae, and C. joropo), by presenting a generally larger orbital diameter and interorbital distance, sexual dimorphism, and specific details of color pattern. We also clarify the type locality of specimens collected by Kjell von Sneidern in the mid‐20th century in the Colombian Amazon. We propose that C. alternifasciatum and C. vagum are junior synonyms of C. anale. We offer an identification key for the species of Chaetostoma from cis‐Andean drainages in Colombia. The new species as is herein categorized as Vulnerable (Vu) B1a (i, iii), following the IUCN criteria.

Key to the species of Chaetostoma from the cis-Andean Amazon and Orinoco drainages of Colombia The species currently known from cis-Andean drainages of Colombia have been recorded from primary museum specimens in all cases except for Chaetostoma breve, whose presence in the upper Putumayo River follows Chindoy et al. (2019).
  • 1. Cheek odontodes straight, supraoccipital excrescence absent...2
    • 1’. Cheek odontodes curved, supraoccipital excrescence present...3
  • 2. Snout covered with plates... (Fowler, 1943) (Amazon and Orinoco drainages)
  • 3. Sides of body without dark spots...4
    • 3’. Sides of body with dark spots...5
  • 4. Dark spots present, restricted to head and base of dorsal fin; sexually-dimorphic males with distal margin of pelvic fin V-shaped... Ballen, 2011 (Orinoco drainage)
    • 4’. Dark spots absent; sexually-dimorphic males with distal margin of pelvic fin round (Lujan et al., 2015a)... Regan, 1904 (Amazon drainage of Colombia and Ecuador)
  • 5. Dorsal-fin pattern consisting of vertical bands anterior to each branched fin ray; sexuallydimorphic males with second unbranched anal-fin ray hypertrophied and bearing two posterior fleshy ridges... (Fowler, 1943) (Amazon drainage)
    • 5’. Dorsal-fin pattern consisting of dark spots and never vertical bands; sexually-dimorphic males with second unbranched anal-fin ray comparable in size to subsequent unbranched rays...6
  • 6. Pectoral-fin leading ray with longitudinal dorsal band, spots on head and body equally abundant, background of body sides uniformly grayish- to yellowish-green... Ballen, Urbano-Bonilla, & Maldonado-Ocampo, 2016 (Orinoco drainage)
    • 6’. Pectoral-fin leading ray with large dark spots, spots abundant on head but less dense onto body, background of body sides dark to light brown with evident cream vertical half of body posterior to pelvic-fin insertion... sp. nov. (Orinoco drainage)

Unexpected to me is how alkaline their water is! Also, if they like these conditions and they co-occur with the other species listed, then I've been keeping the other species wrong (my tanks have been a 50-50 blend of tap and RO, thinking high mountain water wouldn't have picked up many minerals yet. That in itself isn't bad, except that in my tanks the resulting pH is acidic (as low as pH 4) - maybe that's why I haven't been more successful?)
It occurs in streams and rivers with channels 8–50 m wide, shallow depth (0.30–1.3 m), moderate water speed (0.34–0.62 m/s), well-oxygenated water (6.1– 9.5 mg/L), warm temperatures (21–29°C), slightly basic pH (7.1–8.9), and high conductivity (20.4–269.0 μS). In tributaries to the upper Guaviare River, C. chimu has been observed in sympatry the congeners C. dorsale, C. formosae, C. platyrhynchus and C. joropo (Figure 6).

Maybe ?
C. chimu vs. L447
C. chimu vs. L447
Also, take a look at :
C. chimu vs. L446
C. chimu vs. L446
Could it be that? Very similar to the appearance of both, although the facial spots are visually different... maybe too different to be same fish? That said, C. chimu shows quite a bit of variation across its range.

Thanks Eric. For me, L447, for sure. L446 I may need a bit of convincing! Any chance you could please email over the paper? I will combine L447 for now, we can merge L446 later - but I am minded to have it as cf_chimu...
