Summary

The study of reproduction in fish provides relevant information to understand their reproductive behavior, becoming more important in endemic species of a certain region, as is the case of ( = Ixinandria steinbachi ) , a Siluriform fish commonly known as "little old water ” . The objective of this work was to describe characters of the reproductive biology of R. steinbachi females ,collected in the Arias river, Salta province, Argentina. Based on the degree of maturity of the oocytes, the specimens were classified as immature, incipient maturation, advanced maturation and mature. The Fulton index (K) did not present significant differences by stages or by station. The gonad-somatic index (IGS) showed highly significant differences between the means of the stages, being more noticeable between immature (x = 0.59) and mature (x = 13.31). The ovaries showed changes in their morphology, coloration and size during development. The average potential fecundity for mature females was 97.81 ± 30.18 eggs. The oocyte frequency indicated the presence of oocytes of different sizes in the ovaries of different stages. Finally, the minimum size at sexual maturity was 61.37mm.
