I just noticed that the photo shown here for is exactly the same photo for otocinclus macrospilus in the seriouslyfish website. And both are credited to the same photo owner.

Planetcatfish: https://www.planetcatfish.com/common/im ... ge_id=4758

Seriouslyfish: http://www.seriouslyfish.com/species/ot ... crospilus/

Which species is it really, mariae or macrospilus?

Hi,

I share the doubts, IMHO the living ones are not P. mariae, the conserved ones look ok.

You can use this picture:
Image

Caught in a tributary of Tapanahony, Suriname.
According to the official checklists etc. there is only this one Otocinclus species in Suriname. However, I cannot tell if this is really the same as type locality (Rio Mamoré, Bolivia) is quite some distance away...

Cheers,

Hi Jools,

I recommend to add the catching location for my picture as well, considering the huge distance to the type locality and Eschmeyer is listing only:
Distribution: Upper Madeira and lower Amazon River basins, Bolivia.
Tapanahony river is a tributary of Marowijne/Maroni river system and not the Amazone.

Cheers,
