Unwelcome changes to the display of BLOGs

Hi Jools,

After writing a BLOG for

Auchenipterichthys coracoideus

, I observed two changes to the view of BLOG reports, neither of which is desireable:

• The "Breeding behavior" notes field does not display at all. It is simply absent from what a a person viewing the BLOG can see.
• It used to be that if I typed HTML code (e.g., <a href="https://youtu.be/TngMpcTfCWA">HERE</a>) into a text field (e.g., for breeding behavior or segregation) while preparing a BLOG entry, that text would be a functional weblink when people read the BLOG entry

. But now that text displays only as text, with the HTML code visible as text too.

I know both of these used to be different, so I expect they are the result of some update to the website.

These are not on purpose, so will look at fixing and improving. I am fond/proud of the BLog feature, so want to try to get it as nice as possible for those who take the time to use it.

Behaviour has been re-instated. I am not actually sure if it ever was missing, but it sure is back there now! Now looking at the link code issue.

Thanks, Jools. Sorry I can't offer any explanation for why the behavior box didn't display when I was checking before, but I can confirm yes it does display now.

Going back a long time (here), the other element that doesn't display in BLOGs is the age of the parents. If a person doesn't report a parental age, the source of the fish statement follows immediately after the sizes of the smallest fish, with no "space" between the two sentences (see top of picture, red arrow). If age of parent data is provided, then a single letter, "s" is inserted between the period following the size of smallest fish sentence and the word "The" at the start of the source of the fish statement (see bottom of picture, red arrow); still there are no spaces present. Personally, I don't think this is a big deal since many (most?) people don't know or report the age of the fish at the time of spawning, although you can tell when age data is provided because of that little "s."

Anyway, thanks for fixing the behavior display - that's one of the most important fields of the BLOG. And I hope you're able to repair the HTML links (<A href> code).

The HTML code is a full day fix - just more time than I have today, sorry - I need to change how every item is stored on the database to make this work. Or put in a quick fix, but the kind of quick fix that ends up in a big data breach.

So, will think about how to do it. Meanwhile, you could put just the URL in without the HTML.

OK, however, it may be when I fix it you might need to re-edit each one. Not sure, will let you know when I fix it.

I went ahead and deleted the HTML code and just left the URLs. I imagined exactly what you just wrote, that I might need to change things anyway, so for now, it's just straight HTML. People can copy and paste the links into their browsers.

The URL enhacement is now complete. It struck me that it's just simpler if you put a URL in the text, forget all that HTML complexity and the site just links it for you. Which it does. Retrospectively, so your old posts all work (unless there is HTML, then you need to edit that out).

Thanks, Jools. Will this apply to CLOG entries too? Such as when we link to a reference such as an original paper? Or when we link one CLOG page to others in the description/ID sections in order to compare species?

FYI, I viewed a BLOG and yes the URLs work, but the pictures don't display.

Also, from the CLOG page, if I click the link to all breeding reports, my browser says the page can't be displayed.

Ah, I hadn't considered that. OK, so now if the entry in that table contains HTML it doesn't go looking to put a hyperlink in (and break stuff). However, if there is no HTML and there is a plain text URL, it will make it a link.

The blog page appears to work for me. If it doesn't, please post which one?

I tried my own first three: zamora cat, banjo cat and oil cat. Can't access any of them.

But I can see other people's BLOGs.


Correction: I can view my own BLOGs when starting from the BLOG updates on home page, but I can't get to the LIST of BLOGs when starting from a CLOG page.

Fixed now, I had to amend all pages that show details in tables of the format you'll be familiar with in, for example, the species data sheet. There were 32 pages, I think I've got them all.
